Not to belittle this sad development - but aren't you being a little hyperbolic ? A bad tragedy ? When has there ever been a good tragedy ? And twp is not "multiple".

This very sad for the relatives of the deceased, but you're right. However, this is letsrun (and quite likely the OP is American) so hyperbole and sensationalism are the order of the day. Even people who pick up trash from the sidewalk are hailed as 'heroes' these days.

Assume you meant two and yes it is.

Assume you meant two and yes it is.
multiple -consisting of, having, or involving several or many individuals, parts, elements, relations, etc.; manifold.
SEVERAL OR MANY is not two. Saying multiple deaths when there were two is hyperbolic.

If you drink a lot of water, you won't get that.

I'm more fascinated by the breathless claim that the race attracted "thousands from all over the world".

Happens when untrained couch potatoes who have only jogged a 5k in 35 minutes try to do a half marathon.
In the 3-4 hours this event lasted, how many such couch potatoes died of heart attacks, strokes, or other "lifestyle-related" diseases?

It also states that there were 12,000 runners.
There were 8,593 finishers in the half, of which 1 came from outside the US, and 1,612 in the marathon, one of whom came all the way from Canada. There were no Kenyans, the marathon winner running 2:38.
Only 25% of the runners ran sub 2/sub 4!
Maybe it's time to start asking people to provide a doctor's certificate if they haven't run say, a 25 minute 5k.

Fvck, this is LetsRun at its worst. It is a message board grammar, spelling, semantics, do not matter. Did you understand what the person meant or do you need someone to hold your hand?
Such trash to overlook a tradgedy because of a hyperbolic statement.

You have to admit, the title was a bit much
What part of "not to belittle this sad development" don't you understand ? The OP made it sound like a lot of people died in a horrific tragedy. Turns out is a fairly common event - it is not of unheard of for some to die of heart attacks or heat exhaustion etc. at a road race. Sad, but true. If you think my statements are Lets Run at its worst, then you must be new here.
A quick search indicated that the day's high temperature was 80 deg. at 3PM.
What was temperature at race time? What was humidity?
Your main point was crticism of the phrase "bad tragedy." So I think my understanding is complete. Oh deer, You're type of comments are the worst that their is on this massage board.."

If you want to run a road race in France (Alsace region), you need a certificate from a doctor giving you clearance.
For the Berlin Marathon, you need to undergo a medical questionnaire, asking you about allergies, hypertension, diabetes, CVD in your family etc. Not sure what exactly would trigger a red flag and decline your entry though.
Just two examples of what could be done.

Uh, here is an idea:
How about you let people take the risk they want to take? You think it is better to say certain groups cannot run the race b/c they might die?
I've trained closely with 2 - count them two - young Olympic Trials qualifiers who died of heart attacks WHILE training/racing. Both great guys. Terrible tragedies but tragedies happen in life. You won't stop them.
France is ridiculous. A world joke. It is illegal to answer emails after 6pm. Illegal.
Go move to france. In the USA, you can take a risk like a man and die from that risk. I am sure their families are reeling, as they should be, but it is better to die mid-race than die in the drive through of a McDs.
It isn't LRC at its worst. It is facing the truth and realizing that someone with a heart issue might want to run a race. They're more at risk in the everyday office environment than running on a warm day in Raleigh. BAN WORK!!!!!

Just what we need! Even less personal responsibility :) Can someone please wipe my butt, too?
Guys, nowhere did I argue that these approaches should be rolled out to the US or that I support these measures.
I am just trying to point out that the demographics of road races have shifted massively from the 80's.
Back then: 90% serious runners
Now: old men who want to prove something and housewifes

Especially the use of all caps.

I have been training for, and running in, cross country, trail, and road races since '78. Turned 60 this year. Are you saying I'm not a serious runner? That's pretty funny.
