I'm moving here and I've always worried about another 9/11 style attack that could impact this whole area. No I don't see another plane attack, but I do see a bomb or something being blown up and I'm terrified to live in the area with this imminent gloom and doom hanging over me.
I live here. (Yes that's correct even given the handle.) I went through a period of time after 9/11 that I didn't feel comfortable commuting through big transportation hubs like grand central or port authority, and i even took a job in the burbs for a year. but i'm back in manhattan and after a while you don't think about that stuff much. new york is a monstrous city, and even if something happens again, the chances of you being right there are extremely slim. and even if you dont stay for a lifetime, you'll get the experience of living and working in the greatest city in the US (without question). The women are gorgeous, the museums, parks and architecture is world-class, and the ability to make big money and advance your career is at a level unlike anywhere in the US. Make the move and you won't regret it. assuming you're single, do yourself a favor and live only in manhattan, brooklyn or maybe astoria queens. or hoboken and jersey city NJ. yes its expensive but you'll only be young once.
Growing up during The Cold War in NYC I practiced "Duck and Cover"*.
Some time around the 4th grade Mrs Mommywineturtle had to come to the Principal's Office.
Seems it was frowned upon to point out that since you can see the Chrysler Building (where the Commies will drop the second A-Bomb after the first topples the Empire Star Building) from the fourth floor of the school hiding under the desk is just plain stupid.

If you are really worried you should go to Idaho with all the other fruit cakes. Worry about important things like the chance of a friend or family member dying of suicide is 10000 times more likely than dying from a terrorist in the US.
By the way I had for people that I knew well die in the 9/11 attack and I lived in NYC for 30 years so no self righteous BS please.

I wouldn't worry about an attack. If it happens, it happens. Nothing you can do. What you really need to worry about is getting pushed in front of an on-coming subway. 55 people were hit/died last year. While some probably jumped, it gets pretty crazy on some platforms during rush hour.

I avoid the subway like the plague. I walk around 3 miles a day in manhattan to avoid it. Not to mention a monthly metrocard is up to like $115. The subway sucks.
A terrorist attack is the last thing I would be worried about it. There isn't a NY'er that hasn't been mugged or at least a family member or close friend that has been mugged. I'm more worried about getting a six pack of beer for under $15, where my dog is going to poop or being made fun of in Chinatown when I ask if there's a poo poo platter on the menu.

How many people in the US die annually from terrorist attacks? Oftentimes, the answer is 0.
Meanwhile, about 30,000 Americans die each year in automobile collisions. Wy aren't you terrified of being hit by a car every time you leave your home?

Move to the west-side. The number 1 Subway is great. If the train is full you just wait 2 - 3 minutes for the next one.
I work on top of Times Square station but even if a bomb went off, the chances of being in that station at that time are minimal.
But I worked in London for 9 years. You get pretty indifferent when you're used to bombs going off around you.
Manhattan today feels a lot safer than London did then.
