I avoid the subway like the plague. I walk around 3 miles a day in manhattan to avoid it. Not to mention a monthly metrocard is up to like $115. The subway sucks.
Move to the west-side. The number 1 Subway is great. If the train is full you just wait 2 - 3 minutes for the next one.
I work on top of Times Square station but even if a bomb went off, the chances of being in that station at that time are minimal.
But I worked in London for 9 years. You get pretty indifferent when you're used to bombs going off around you.
Manhattan today feels a lot safer than London did then.
