This is my 1st post after reading the entire thread. The fact that I found all my symptoms here and also solutions to my problem gave me hope.
I live in Canada.
Symptoms started around March 26th so almost 6 months since.
Sep 29th local MRI ordered by the local sports doctor – I’ll do it but I do not expect too much.
Monday Sep 28th I’m going to schedule an appointment with Dr. Brown Mtl (I heard from page 136 that Dr. Kosar Khwaja took over from him - i have no idea if it's true or not)
Oct 27th – MRI and appointment with Dr. Myers
I have an aunt that lives 120 km away from Munich where Dr.M’s clinic is. Asked her to call the clinic and get me as much info as she could.
I’m going to MTL anyways Oct 18-22 so why don’t let Dr. Brown see me? OHIP canadian governmental health insurance covers all.
Oct. 27th I’m getting another diagnostic from Dr. Myers which upon all the statements here it is going to be 100% accurate. ($1800 everything included - out of my pocket)
Knowing that I’m going to decide where and when to go and have surgery.
Options would be:
1. Dr. Brown (Dr. Khwaja ???) – I’d ask him to do it without mesh – OHIP covered – not ranked no. 1 or 2
2. Dr. M – cheaper than Dr. Myers-very high rate of success, commodities free (my aunt lives there) – to be paid out my pocket
3. Dr. Myers – the one that puts the diagnostic – very reliable but very expensive $15000 – paid out of my pocket
What do you think guys? I only want to get my diagnostic ASAP and then fix my problem.
Another question would be about what pre-op rehab should I do. I'm doing now some basic core (waiting for Core-X) and some adductor stretching (Boyle) plus adductor foam rolling (Boyle). Is that ok or/and enough?
Thanks.
Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or "

I've scheduled an examination with Dr. UM Nov 19th and if necessary surgery on Nov 20th.
I'm not sure if I'm going to see Dr. Myers Oct 27th or not.
Here are my symptoms. Everything started 6 months ago.
- 1st was right testicle pain/soreness/numbness/tenderness for a while followed later on by
- lower abdominal pain/tenderness/numbness in the right of the inguinal canal (max radius 3-5 cm around it) followed later on until present by
- numbness in abductors, hamstrings, quads, glute and calf (not everyday)
When I lie down everything disappears. I only have pains in the morning let’s say aprox 2 h between 9:30 – 11:30 and then only tenderness or numbness. After any strenuous activity comes inflammation that lasts couple of days. I’m OK when I stand, walk and any other movement. Symptoms only sitting.

I had the Lloyd release procedure done in Jan 09 and it was bilateral.
I am still in pain and looking for a UK specialist. -
I suffered a terrible groin injury during a rugby match almost seven months ago and was diagnosed with a sports hernia four months ago. I saw the doctors, got the MRIs, stopped working out for months, saw physical therapists yet nothing seemed to work.
After my last visit with the orthopedic surgeon, we decided on surgery, but not until I tried my last ditch effort: prolotherapy. Since my prolo treatment started, I\\\\\\\'ve noticed a BIG improvement. I\\\\\\\'m not 100% yet, but have been hitting the gym for the last 2 weeks like the old days and am experiencing little to no pain during or after.
I did notice some mild pain today (1 or 2 on a scale to 10), but for the most part feeling great.
I\\\\\\\'ve been reading this blog and commiserating with everyone and wish everyone success. But, if you\\\\\\\'re out of options and have the cash, I\\\\\\\'d really really suggest trying prolotherapy.
I\\\\\\\'m seeing the prolo doctor again in 2 weeks and will update people on whether or not the results I experience last.
Best of luck to everyone and stay positive! -

I tried a mix of the regular Prolo and the PRP Prolo for 3 months ....It did help a little but never repaired the tears per the MRI I had pre surgery.....Mine was a 5 year old injury so surgery was pretty much the only thing that was going to fix it....Good luck with it

I'm about 4 months out of mesh surgery with Dr. Jeff Hoadley and I finally started playing soccer again this week. It was only a pick-up game and I was pretty tentative out there. But I don't seem to be having any serious problems other than the fact that my knees are aching and I have a pretty bad hamstring. I still have some mild inflammation in my groin which is a concern, but otherwise I can jog and run without any pain as long as my knees will take it. I think if I can get past these other dysfunctions, everything will be ok.
So, I think there are some lessons to be learned... recognize the signs right away and get a diagnosis. The longer you wait to deal with it -- surgery or not -- the more dysfunctions that will result because of it. Also, for those of you hearing 4-6 week recovery times, that is not going to happen for the majority of us. If it does, you are lucky. Many of us here have been on the sidelines for months and years. Those timelines are for pro athletes -- so if your doctor is telling you that you will be back to normal in a month, you need to keep in mind that the bar is set by pro players who have nothing to do all day except train and get massages.
good luck everyone! -
Den is SOOOO right when he says the majority of us will be out for months or even years after surgical repair. I, too, was given the very optimistic timelines after surgery, but here I am, 7 months later and I am still having some problems. It's funny how doctors will start to do back some pedaling when you report back to them in 3 or 6 months about having problems and then all of a sudden the excuses start rolling off their tongues - 'Well, you must be a slow healer and will need 8-12 months to heal,' or 'You are just experiencing nerve irritation as the nerve comes back to full sensitivity - give it a few more months.' My point being...what doctor is going to come right out and say, "Hey, maybe I missed something or didn't suture it well enough." NOT A ONE!! It is easier for them to give the old "you just need a little more time to heal." If you are not a pro-athlete, don't buy into the 4-6 weeks claim that you will be back in the gym or picking up some street basketball within that time frame. Anticipate at least a full 12 months for a solid recovery. That way, if you are much stronger before the 12 months, you will be super happy. Bottom line, be realistic with how much time is REALLY required to heal from a sports hernia surgery.

I'll be honest, I didn't notice any major improvement until after 3 months. After my first treatment I felt pretty good for about a week, but the pain came right back once I got my second set of injections. Only after about 3 months and four treatments did I notice a solid improvement. It's been almost 4 months right now, and I start my 5th treatment soon, so I hope it stays strong!
I know a big part of it depends on which doctor you see too. In So Cal, there are a lot of people who do this, so I had my options and believe that I picked one of the better ones.
Good luck with your recovery though! I don't know how you dealt with this for 5 years, it's a rough injury and in my mere 7 months of experiencing I felt horrible all around so I applaud you in getting through all of it -
Den is right.....Lots of dysfunctions will develop the onlger you do not get this fixed........5 years for me threw my pelvis way out of whack which caused more pain in the hips, back and shoulders........I thought the Surgery would take care of this in time and it still may but at 9 weeks out I sought out the help of a Chiropractor/Kineseologist ....sure enough my pelvis was still way out of whack and very tourqed to one side....I have had tremendous results with just 2 weeks of treatment and now the pelvis seems to be holding her adjustments and kinseo work she does........noticed a lot less pains in the back and glutes.........I will continue to go until Im sure it will hold.............Now Im jsut dealing with the recent scar tissue breaking apart which left one side of my groin and pubic area very sore and swollen...always a battle
anyways my point is if you have had this injury long surgery alone may not be enough to balance out your pelvis you may need help t get you out of the woods -

Hockey,
I haven't been massaging the pubic bone area/abs (at least not for medicinal purposes). Anyway, I will try it, but I don't really know how I'd do it! On the groin, I just used lotion and got in deep...with the abs/pubis I am not sure what approach to use considering the hair factor.
what is ur technique? -
JC,
Anything to aid with/complement your recovery, chiropractor or otherwise, is well worth it. You are still very early on, in my opinion. I've been going for ART therapy which has been great in dealing with tightness and scar tissue/soft tissue problems. I highly recommend it. As a matter of fact, he did some great work on my hip today. The guy I see is a chiropractor -- so I can go in for an adjustment, ART, and he gives me rehab exercises also.
Just so there isn't any confusion, when I said that many of us have been on the sidelines for months and years, I was referring to pre-surgery. My doctor (Jeff Hoadley in Atlanta) was very upfront with me that my rehab would probably take longer. He said, obviously that I don't have a pro athlete's body -- so I had to be realistic. He said it was possible for full recovery in 4-8 weeks. I wasn't misled in any way. But I see a lot of these protocols, and they are meant for pros. That's why I cringe when I see 2-4 week recovery times. For those of us who have been out for a long time, there is no way to correct all the deficiencies that existed before the injury and as a result of the injury, in that short amount of time.
The other thing is that you have to be very dedicated and patient in your rehab. I've been very frustrated at times because the process is not very fast. I have to keep in mind that it took my body almost 18 months to reach the point where I needed surgery. So to think that I was going to recover in a matter of weeks was far-fetched -- although I was hopeful.
The one thing I would recommend to everyone is getting a Go-Fit exercise ball and Go-Fit bands. I think these have been an important part of my recovery because of the areas that are so well targeted. You can get a video with the ball and instruction book with the bands. There are a ton of exercises. I just got the Core X system also, but I haven't gotten fully involved in it yet.
I'm hoping to play my first organized soccer game in a few weeks if all goes well. I'll keep you posted. But the good news is that I can jog, run, and play pickup games -- which I haven't been able to do in almost two years.
cheers -
my son had both sides done by Dr. UM about 1 1/2 years ago. his symptom was pain in the testicles. everythiing was fine after surgery after the initial weeks. the pain has returned. is this unusual for Dr UM's work? i emailed her, but we don't know what to do. he was in line for a nice college athletic scholarship.
