I am a college runner nearing the end of my career. I am interested in continuing to run post collegiately. Running is a part of who I am, I have not really reached my full potential and I know I have more to go. I don't know if I wanna stick with 5k/10k a little longer or move up to half/marathon yet. Anyways, I'm 22 and my 5k PR is 14:41. I know I'll never be big time, but I wanna keep at it.
I know a ton of people continue to run competitively post collegiately, I am just wondering what the lifestyle is like and what your job is (and maybe what you majored in during college). I realize some guys will have it easier to train if their job is less demanding, but I want to find a good balance between successful occupation and sufficient time to continue running competitively. I'll go ahead and admit I'm not the most social dude out there, and I am still a bit of a running nut, so I'd like to devote myself to training but still make sure I advance my career.
What is your job, what did you major in during college? What kind of times are you still running and what is your training like? Are you sacrificing a lot to fit in your training, and if so how? Or are you more laid back about it and don't really care if you miss a day (but I'm mainly making this thread in regards to guys who are still pretty strict about their training). Also, do you train solo or with a group? And do you have any "big" goals, or is it just to PR at a certain race or distance? I know only a select few ever have the ability to chase the USA trials and stuff like that.
I just wanna get an idea of how it's done. What's the lifestyle and what are good jobs to pair with a competitive running focus?
