Was that supposed to trump the two golds and a silver?
I agree, these two seem incompatible. Al's head is like a balloon, while Cam seems down to earth, just don't feel like a good fit. Here's my take: Cam feels obligated to take this 'opportunity' to go with one of the best stables, be coached by the revered Salazar, wear the logo of running shoe mothership. It feels a little like a guy going to play for the Yankees.
Salazar wanted to add a hot name to his roster, saw all the love Cam has been getting on LRC and Flotrack, and knew he could capitalize on Cam's recent success.
We'll see how it pans out, but I don't think Alberto really thinks Cam is as talented as says. I think by now we've all conceded that Levin's success, has been at least in part, due to the mega-mileage that he runs. 100-120 miles is still a big week, but If you thrived running 150, 100 is only 66% of your workload. But what the hell do I know?
So Cam, if you check out Letsrun to find out what a bunch of dummies are saying about you, it's all out there. Listen, we're about the same age, and I wish you a lot of success because you're talented and seem like you deserve it. But look out for number one, man. And say what's up to Canada.

Are you really calling a 23year old, who had just just completed a full NCAA campaign before the summer games, a failure because he couldn't compete against a couple of older, professional athletes who were training specifically for the olympics all year? I see your point, Levin's is a loser.
Salazar coaches a couple of medalists and all of a sudden he's the greatest coach to ever walk the earth, an apparently no-one will EVER again beat his athletes (unless he wants them too) I'm not saying he's not a great coach, but let go of his dangle.

Salazar doesn't think that for the same reason a college coach doesn't recruit footlocker winners just to find "workout bodies." Anyone can see that Levins has amazing talent, do you think salazar will squander that?
I dont see that he has amazing talent. This is a guy who didn't make NCAA cross country finals his 1st three years of college.
The fact that he won an NCAA title is AMAZING.
He ABSOLUTELY trained his butt off but guess what - that's it. He's peaked. No shame in that.
Just like Josh McDougal.
He would have been what the US#6 at World XC. Not super talented - super hard working. He way overachieved.
-hmmmmmmmm......
PS. Unless there is something to all these rumors about Salazar, then he'll improve.

I say: How is winning the 5,000 meter olympic trials - outkicking for all intents and purposes, THE kicker of kickers, Bernard Lagat - not "winning a real race?"
You are a loser.

thank you for the deep and thoughtful insight into cam levins and his potential
if only cam knew better than the random anons here like you he would pursue something more worthwhile now that he has peaked
shame

How old is Lagat again?

Of course he'll improve. Because he'll be training like an Olympic champion, not like some 1970s road warrior.
There are so many idiots on this thread it is ridiculous.
Your going to judge a potential coach/athlete relationship by a few quotes in ONE article???
I am sure Levins will still get plenty of mileage.
I am more concerned about him getting a decent looking haircut, than the nonsense spouted on this thread.
Man, how can you say Levins has peaked when he hasn't even stopped hitting PRs? Yeah, he had a bad world cross, but he had some great races indoors. I don't see a comparison to McDougal at all, especially because he's not injured. Mcdougal didn't run all that high of mileage, either.
Cam isn't dumb. He has to know there's not much more he can get from increasing mileage. He knows what Alsal says is true. He can't just keep increasing and improving until he's doing 300 mile weeks.

Always dumb*sses where there is anonymity, no surprise there. Don't judge everyone on the majority though, the majority is always dumb.
The way you judge Letsrun, europeans easily could judge USA based on generalisations and a bunch of f*cked up individuals + a dumb majority who love to show how dumb they are on TV etc.
Though, they are not really judging the relationship based on the quote, but more on how different they both seem as persons.
Hope all works out well and that Cam improves and break new personal barriers this season as well.
To add to this, it sounds like Cam and AlSal have identified some specific areas of training that Cam has yet to exploit (eg the strength and ancillary workouts). With this and perhaps better monitoring of his workload/recovery (particularly, preventing him from being rundown and sick; how often has this guy had sinus infections etc? He was sick for both the olympics and world xc) I think he has quite a bit of room for more improvement. Additionally, he has the closing speed to medal and doesnt have to be too much faster overall to be a medal threat in a slow race.
Don't be surprised when Cam comes bursting out of the gate this summer/fall, starts running even faster, and people will say that Salazar's emphasis on quality workouts and ancillary protocols are to credit for that improvement.
No, it's because he ran HUGE MILEAGE and is about to cash in on it. Watch.
Yeah, it's for Cain when she goes out there this summer. Not as Mary's mule. More just a training partner/buddy.
As for Cam and Sal, it's a trial marriage for both. Odds it will be a LTR? Slim.
Levins already is world class.
His comments were on the mark. It is more than mileage that gets athletes to the elite level. There are other factors to consider. Cam is going to burn his body out quickly if he does not watch what he is doing.
He is no guinea pig. He is the real deal, if he doesn't do harm or hasn't already done too much damage to himself.
and salazar has no medals
