Didn't Solinsky do it as a junior? What about Rupp as a senior? I seem to recall him having a rather stellar senior year. Not sure if anyone has since Rupp (he did, right?), but finding out wouldn't take very long.
Ummmmmmmm ever heard of Galen Rupp?
Galen Rupp 2009
Chris Derrick came very close last year
I've been doing the research on the women's side. It's never been done.
The women's 5k was only added in 1989. Only two women have won 3k/5k - Sally Kipyego (2007) and Kim Smith (2004).
I'll do the men next.
Men also began the 5k in 1989.
Galen Rupp is the only American to win the 5k/3k in the same year. He did it in 2009.
Solinsky won the 3k in 2005 and 2006 and the 5k in 2007.

Doesn't make sense as written. Has it been done twice, or did these women win both races but in different years?
Can you post a link to historical NCAA results?
I should know this already, because I know my coach was top-5 against Nyambui in the 2-mile back in the late 70s, but did they ever hold a 3-mile? Or did they just add a 5k for the first time?
I know that they held a 1-mile and 2-mile forever basically.

Actually it DOES make sense as written. Remember that the question was "when is the last time an AMERICAN won the 3000/5000 double?"

Of course it makes sense, both of the Johnson brothers are idiots. The evidence is in their writing.
Runnerspace.com has results right back to 1998. Just click full history:

Regarding 3k/5k double- no idea how many times its been done but I know Alistair Cragg did it twice and I *think* he may be the only person to have done the double-double. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though
Julie Shea from NC State won 3k, 5k, AND 10k at Nationals back in the early 80's. But that was outdoor. NC State was also 1-2-3 in the 10k that meet.
Kipyego is Kenyan. Smith is Kiwi.
Solinsky came close; if he was facing someone that had doubled he would have gotten it.
Why does it have to be American?
Lawi should get mad props for doing it last year.
Hell he should get bigger props for doing the mile/3k double this year as they are within 2 hours of each other.
More importantly, Rupp did the 5k/3k/Mile leg of DMR triple win.
The ultimate distance performance.
