Thanks for this important lesson on how to treat others. I am thinking of pursing a Ph.D. and/or MD so to understand that better.

Not all people are trying to con you. Some just have different tastes than yours. Learn to respect that, or learn to live in paranoia for the rest of your miserable pesimisstic life.
Thank you for your analogy. I, however, do not carry, nor do I look over my shoulder. I suspect that most people do not want to shoot anyone. Perhaps that makes me a pessimist.
I would like to add at this point that you did not express an opinion. You stated definitively that Tom Hanks is the best actor ever, followed distantly by Wayne, Gibson, Cage, et al. This was not an issue of taste. You declared it as fact. Since I know very few people who consider those men to be great actors, I assumed (apparently incorrectly) that you were joking.
Or maybe I was only joking about joking, which means you are the one who has been fooled. Perhaps I really think that John Wayne's ability to play only one role (and portray it poorly) does in fact put him in a tie for 2nd best actor ever.
Then again, maybe I'm joking now. The world will never know. Well, the world may, but you never will.
Now, since all this is in fact trivial, you can go back to important things like atheism and academia.

Please read more carefully before you so you do not misunderstand. He did not write that he is an academic. Moreover, what wrong with being an atheist?

A distant 2nd place for best actor(s) ever is highly debatable between Tomas Cruz, John Wayne, Mel Gibson, Humphrey Bogart, Eastwood, Nicholas Cage and De Niro.
Hanks has always been on his own level that nobody else can touch.
All of these actors, except for Hanks, basically use the same technique for every character they play. So at one point, it is less acting for these guys, as it is playing a role.

I have no problems with atheism or academia. I was merely suggesting that those must be his passions in life since he identifies himself in such a way. Cool for him for having two advanced degrees. And even cooler for him for denouncing religion.
John Wayne was one of the worst actors of all-time

Which is why I was certain he was trolling. He picked a bunch of guys who all play the same role over and over. He said they were all tied for second behind a guy who can play any role. But, alas, I was obviously wrong. He said he wasn't trolling, so he must not have been.
Who?
His best role was Bill the Butcher, but whatever...

Ever hear of Dustin Hoffman? No, guess not.
DDL is indeed a great actor.
Sean Penn is another one of my favourites. Simply great.
I recently saw "One flew over the cukoo's nest". Jack was very very good, as was the whole cast.
can't believe it's 2 pages and no one has mentioned one of his most memorable roles!

Get real. Watch DeNiro in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Deerhunter. Tom Hanks can't touch those rolls. And don't give me anything about Hanks' diversity. At best he's only as diverse as Deniro. But I don't think he has the depth. Al Pacino is better too.

Philadelphia? Hanks has played characters who have a lot of depth. Deniro is obviously one of the all time greats as well (even if all his recent roles involve him playing a caricature of his former badass characters). DDL never misses, though.
Am I the only one who thought "Lincoln" had the feel of something that would be playing at a museum exhibit on a continuous loop? The thing felt like cardboard.
Mel Gibson is the best, not even close.
But acting is stupid, so who cares? The best actors are the ones with no experience, the others take it too seriously; serious it isn't.

This is the single funniest thing I have read on the Internet! Absolute comedy gold! Very few people can use sarcasm properly, so it is a treat when something like this crops up. Thank you!
