the vast majority of 16 minute high school girls are over-hyped. most have nearly maxed out their potential by being in regimented programs since their early teens. only a rare few actually have low 15 native talent.
time will tell if hasay is a world-class talent in the long races, but she's had this supersonic hype following her, based on having good talent and very early high-level training.
look at what she was doing as a 12yo compared to d'agostino or coburn or rogers; those other girls probably spent their early teens doing 1/4 the training of hasay...if that. hasay was winning 5k's when rogers was chasing the ice cream truck down the street.
we should all have the experience and wisdom to know that these 16 minute school girls are the very ones we should NOT hype, because most of them--at 16 or 17--are already close to the best they'll ever be--and that is just another of the many 20 year old ladies running 16 minutes, and hoping to run 15:30 but probably not talented enough to do it.
i hate to see and hear hasay say she's embarrassed to perform so poorly in front of the oregon fans. she needs to reorganize her identity and realize she's just another good runner, and not this superstar like rupp.
she will be happier if she moves forward with expectations based on reality, and not on hype. she needs to join the large throng of ladies who are going to work hard over the next few years, hoping it works in their favor and they get a legit shot to reach their goals. just join the pack, jordan, you're one of them. oh, and have a conversation with kim conley.
