Just wondering, I know a lot of elite marathoners drink coffee everyday. On the college side of things do you know anyone who was a all-american and drinks coffee before races.

I had a teammate who was a D2 all American and he told us to do this because it helps. If you drink coffee everyday anyway it may not help as much, which is why 2 weeks before a big race you might consider a caffeine taper and focus on getting lots of sleep. Then drink coffee before race. You might very well have jitters at the starting line but the effort will seem easier during the race being all wired up. Just be careful you don't take out the race too fast of course..use your head and stick to your planned racing strategy
No one on my team did. Coffee was a morning ritual, but that was all. It never settled in my stomach well enough to race on. A few of my teammates and I bought some First Endurance Pre-Race though... that stuff will give you a good kick in the pants.
If you have trouble with coffee you can get No-Doz or similar for pretty cheap. I'd stay away from the caffeinated gels and energy drinks, though.
