I typically do them on the road, and reserve my I-pace and R-pace sessions for the track.
Is the track a good spot for tempos?

Yes. It's very precisely/accurately measured, if that's important to you.
And it's great for developing a feel for what your tempo pace should be, if that doesn't come naturally to you.
yep. i've run a half marathon on the track. by myself. 10:30 at night.
I have found tempo runs to be easier on the track. There's something about the instant feedback of knowing you're exactly on-pace that is both reassuring and entertaining to me during tempo runs.
I did a tempo on the track earlier this week and for some reason my hips were very sore the next day. I do enjoy the softer surface, but if you wear a Garmin they are not accurate while running on tracks.

Why is this? I've noticed the same thing myself when doing I-pace runs. On one side of the track I'll be doing like 3:11/km pace, and then like 3:55 on the other.
It's a trade-off between a softer surface [than roads] but turning left all the time. You can counter the latter effect by changing directions every few laps (use all 8 lanes and maybe the infield to make a gentle turn without slowing down much), if you have most of the track to yourself.
Another advantage to using the track for tempo workouts is being away from traffic and frequent stops at intersections. I prefer the park for that purpose, but not everyone has trails easily accessible.

There might be people more qualified to answer this than me, but it is my understanding that Garmins work through a series of dots instead of measuring the distance exactly. Meaning that in a straight line it will be very accurate, but on an oval like a track the dots will be all over the place on the curves, thus messing up the reading.
Yeah. It cuts the curves when you're going "fast". That screws up your pace calculation so I hand time everything and only pay attention to the elapsed time on the track.
