U of M CP is one of the most disappointing institutions in the country.
There is no reason given its location that it should not be at the the academic, athletic and prestige levels of a University of Michigan.
But it is a far cry from it. The school suffered for decades because the politicians preferred to spread the wealth to that urban hell hole known as Baltimore rather than take the obvious opportunity to build a world class university 12 miles from Capitol Hill. (Long time faculty agree with this point). Yes, I understand Maryland has some very good programs, but by and large their record is one of wasted opportunities. The 660 million endowment - a fraction of what it should be - speaks volumes. (Michigan is about 6.5B; UVA, 4.5B, UNC-CH - 2B, for comparisons).
Another depressing factor is its location. The environs surrounding the school have turned into a barrio, and PG County has both high crime and miserable schools - the latter blowing away every correlation between income and school achievement because the federal government's largesse actually provides for a decent per capita income in PG County. Hardly a great place for a culture of education to flourish.
In sum, it is a place that the best and brightest in the state stay away from, and do not support. It empties out on the weekends and has the feel of a commuter school. And of course this is going to have an impact on its athletic programs - it ain't UVa, that's for sure. When I competed in the ACC, Maryland had won 25 straight track titles. Those days are long gone.
This all sound harsh? Maybe. But this has long been a place with much promise, and much of that had gone wasted.
