This is a style that I have been using for a while now and have seen fairly good results with it. I was wondering if anyone else does the same sort of training. Here goes:
Most of the year is spent doing nothing but high level aerobic running with a few strides after some runs. When I decided on a race, I allow 6 weeks of preparation where I do intense interval training. For example: 1 day of long intervals (1000-2000 meters), 1 day of shorter intervals (400-800 meters), 1 hard AT run or underdistance time trial, and one longer run of 12+ miles. The other days are mileage builders at a sustainable aerobic pace. I do this for five weeks and then taper off significantly the last week. Generally I try to do this for three races per year (fall, spring, and summer races). In essence, only 18 weeks out of the year are spent training at a high intensity level. I have not had any overtraining problems despite going really hard during the 6 week phases. Anyone else have any luck with a system like this?
