Rupp is paid by Nike. Most Nike runners are told to run there, I guess Rupp is the exception to the rule.
I agree, you need to PERFORM to be paid. So... PERFORM! Bottom line: American's are afraid to race. In most cases the world. Remember when there was a trials in the 10k? In the 70's these guys ran the trials 10k, then ran the marathon trials (yup, it was held on the same week) and then came back for the 10k final.
Yes that was probably dumb but they all did it and raced. High Schoolers don't race each other, college teams duck out from top competition to protect their "ranking" and pros race once a month so they wont run bad and keep getting a pay check.
If running ever wants to be paid you actually need to perform week in and week out. Hockey plays 3-4 times a week. Baseball 6 or 7. Football once. Our best runners run 1-3 times a year. No wonder our sport media is controlled by Dean what's his name. At least he does something to get in the news.
If Rupp can't handle a fast 10k, then run a sit and kick race a month later then he has no hope running against the best in the world anyways.
