Mutai won the race and recorded the fastest time in history. Not only did he win a ton of money, but his appeal skyrocketed. He will forever command sick appearance fees, he overshadowed the other Mutai's amazing run the day before, and has more name recognition amoung the general public than any marathoner in the last few years (maybe decades). Every elite marathoner on the planet wants to be Mutai right now.

What were you saying about does not count and elites not wanting to come back?

Absolutely not true. Not even close. No one outside of Boston and running were even aware there was a marathon in Boston Monday. Those that are aware of the marathon (ie live near Boston) have no idea who won except he was "some Kenyan again".

I meant African marathoner, as white people generally create more press. And maybe that statement was off, but Mutai is still the man right now and it was certainly well worth his while to run the race.

People do not know who Mutai is. A lot of people know that some guy ran the fastest marathon time ever on Monday but almost no one knows his name.

And ... "NEWSFLASH" ... if an athlete wins the Olympic 100 m dash in 9.65 with a +2.1, he still wins the gold medal. Just no record.

Boston is so unpopular because it is not a WR course, each year becomes more difficult to find people who want to run there.

To most runners and nearly all non-runners, Boston is synonymous with marathon. If someone runs the fastest time ever at Boston (ie. "marathon") it's the world record regardless of what some governing body says. 2:03:02 is now the world record. Here endeth the lesson.

Having courses that don't count for the world record is nowhere near as ridiculous as having weight classes in boxing and wrestling. Those are just exceptions so that guys that aren't any good at the sport can compete. It would be like if they took VO2 max or something before a race and then had classes based on that. What a joke!

I think more people are doing marathons than ever. There are more people with BQ times than ever (though that can be attributed to easing the standards a few years ago).

Most people who ran Boston couldn't tell you who won. Most people in any city outside of Boston could tell you the world record within 5 minutes.

Seriously! The sport is TOO popular, if anything. What would the world be like without Runners' World, celebrity marathoner, $150 running shoes, etc.! It would be like the '70s man, like back in the day!
