OK, let's start it up again, but this time without the "Re:" beginning.
Decent week of running, 48 miles on 7 days, but still some issues. Did about 3 miles of 6:10 pace tempo-ing last Sunday in a 7.5 mile run. Did Fartlek of 6 miles (average pace, 6:35/mi) on Friday, otherwise pretty easy miles (in the 7:20-7:50 pace range). After Sunday's run, the hip wasn't bugging me too bad, so I thought I'd push a little harder on it late in the week. Friday's Fartlek was too much, as Saturday's 7.5 mile run required me to stop several times to stretch. So the lingering hip issue still has me held somewhat in check. I've determined that the problem is mostly due to weakness in the abductor region, and I think it may have all started with the toe problems that I was having back in early August. I suspect that the toe issue caused me to change my gait just enough to alter the stresses in the hip region, so now I'm dealing with those tightnesses/strains that have developed. Probably did do some microtear damage that will take time to heal. Par for the course, I guess.
While all this hip issue has been ongoing, I was thinking about exercises that I used to do as a speed-skater that worked on some of those hip stabilizer muscles, and realized one off-ice exercise we did that was designed for working on skating oval turns might exactly exercise one of the muscles in question, so I tried this leg crossover exercise, and "oh momma" did that hurt!!
So here's the topic for the week: Did you engage in sports (or have some other significant injury) "back when", that today causes lingering detrimental effects on your running? I can't say that speed-skating caused of the problems that I'm having with my right hip, but it did make me think of the question. But to answer the question, I may have broken my right toe about 20 years ago (or I at least severely jammed it such that it's never been quite the same since), that may have been a catalyst for the problem I'm experiencing now.
Hope everyone is in a good place. As always, love to hear what's going on.
