It looks as if Tokyo Olympics 2012 is coming. Eyjafjallajokull keeps spouting airline killing ash. Tokyo is the only city in the world where all of the 16 or so Summer Olympis sports venues are already built and in active use on a regular basis. Thank the Gods of Eyjafjallajokull.
Some of those Tokyo venues are ancient, but hell, I'd be so stoked on a Tokyo Olympics! Just make them do it in October again 'cause "summer" is too damn hot/humid.
Each venue in Tokyo has been rebuilt or refurbished in recent times. Instant Summer Oh\'s quicker than a Cup O Noodle. Los Angeles is the only other place where the venues are already built, with a new Metro Rail line from LAX to the main venues.
That's good to hear. I left Tokyo 12 years ago so I didn't know they had fixed up all the venues! I know there is also a brand new stadium in nearby Yokohama that was built for the 2002 World Cup (and conveniently located 15 min walk from my mother-in-law's house!) I will get to return next February - considering the Tokyo Marathon while I'm there...
Heck, if you really want to get far away from the volcanic ash, put the Games back in Sydney or Melbourne. Or try Buenos Aires for a change.
Not in 2 years. Those savages in Australia and Argentina don\'t have permanent electricity nor running water yet.
My guess is nothing will be definite until about 3-5 days before the games begin. They'll look on weather.com, see the forecast, and if it looks like there will be volcanic ash, they'll move the games to some other city (possibly Tokyo) that has a better forecast (not just ash, but the weather in general). It's definitely not worth buying plane tickets until the day before you want to go.
