LBP with another huge penn relays anchor...g-town was totally out of it until u saw that trademark kick almost take hernandez down!

LBP nearly does it again! Great run for him. Purely a hypothetical, but plugging him in for either of Columbia's first two guys and they win. Hernandez ran a very smart leg as well.

The Ivy schools get bent over by the 5th year rule. It really puts them at a huge disadvantage.

Penn St has all sophmores and Columbia is getting everyone back.

Sorry, but LBP wouldn't have run this well for a fifth year under Willy Wood, or under any coach at Columbia for that matter. Quality training partners and training locales at Georgetown, as well as adequate coaching, have made the difference for this bright new star in American Mid-Distance running.

i'm pretty sure ulrey ran the 3rd leg in 4:03ish with a big kick @ the end, setting up Ark nicely for the win (McLary anchored in 4:02 I'm pretty sure)

Don't know what LBP is studying...but having less academic pressures prob makes a difference too

If you recall LBP kicked down the defending NCAA Champion two years ago for the win while at Columbia! Columbia's anchor leg had the third fastest split of the day with a 1:47.4. This is the first time GT has beat Columbia in about five years in the 4 x 800 at Penn. Without LBP they couldn't beat Columbia despite their talent and quality of training partners.

having 5 years at non-ivys also means that redshirting athletes prevents them from always having their best 4 guys available for relays.

Yeah, it must suck to have to sit guys out just so you can get them an extra year of training and maturity.

Are you serious? Nobody's forcing coaches to redshirt their athletes and take 5 years. If a coach thinks they can put together a better team by not redshirting someone, they're allowed to do it.

did i say it sucks or it was unfair? i just said that the relays they would have on paper don't always materialize.

Frequently when an athlete changes coaches and experiences a new stimulus, they improve. That doesn't mean the previous 4 years weren't integral to his development, it just means that he responded well to a new stimulus and change of environment. On a professional level, an athlete can experiment with different approaches to training in order to further develop. Unfortunately, at the college level, with athletes being replenished every year, a coach can't easily alter his approach for each aging athlete. LBP probably just got everything he was going to get out of Wood's method. Then again, Coach Miltenberg left Columbia 2 years ago and took Wood's training with him to Georgetown...

You're an idiot! Coach Miltenerg was a Georgetown athlete and follows Frank Gagliano's training program. Woods has very little influence on him as a coach. Furthermore, he coaches the girls and not the guys.

I think Miltenberg shares the Henner coaching philosophy. I believe he was under Henner his last 4 years and Gags for only his freshman year.

Just like a runner absorbs training from each program he is part of, coaches learn from every coach that the train and/or work under. I am sure there is some transferred influence. And I am sure there is transferred influence from Milt -> Henner. Any good coach is willing to consider new ideas.

Anyone who has posted on this thread is a complete idiot. There is no animosity between Columbia and Georgetown. These two program are so close. Wood has sent about 6-8 runners there over the last few years. Wood and Milt are like best friends. If you were at Penn you would see that they all know each other well.

Who said there was animosity? Read back through the thread and please highlight to me where there is any mention of animosity.
