Let's see here... he's running 3 minutes faster over 8 miles; 3 minutes is 180 seconds; 180 seconds divided by 8 comes out to be... oh, right... 22.5 seconds/mile.

Of course your example only makes sense if Ryan Hall is basing his massive improvement in tempo running on one single 8 mile tempo run now compared to one single 8 mile tempo run before Beijing, and that one single run is EXACTLY 180 seconds (not 183) faster than the one before Beijing. And both runs better be the same exact 8 mile course. If all that's the case, you got me.
But, more likely he's running his 8 mile tempo runs now approximately 3 minutes faster (surely varies a little run to run), which makes the 22.5 sec exactamundo claim seem a little silly.
Having said all that, I applaud your math skills and I hope Hall kicks butt in Boston.
