Let's say he was running 8-mile tempo runs at 4:40 pace at that time ... he is running them at 4:17.5 now? That is not tempo run ... that is all out effort ... just silly to say he is running his runs at 22.5 seconds faster per mile than before

why would you say that? I would say it is closer to 4:50/4:28...fairly reasonable considering his hm pace is 4:33.
sometimes the buildup clicks and sometimes it doesn't, and it looks to be clicking now for Ryan Hall.
Fatty, your entire argument is based off of an asumption.
Hold up.... Did you see that it was 22.5 seconds faster per lap? A lap is probably more than a mile. Very possible.
Nevermind... looks like it was per mile. I nee to hold up!
how is my argument based off an assumption? No matter how fast he running them before - he should be running equivalent to his fitness now ... are you saying he is capable of sub-4 marathon? if he running 22.5 seconds faster per mile now, then he should be
You need to go back and read all the articles on his training again. Going into London 08 he was running his tempos the fastest he ever had. But going into the olympics he was running much slower, etc. So in the big picture he may only be running his tempos 10sec/mile faster than he has ever done them.

which is still a lot.
I might be stupid - but aren't tempo runs same as threshold runs where you are running at rate just above where lactate acid building up? Are you saying he is able to run 22.5 seconds faster per mile at just above where his lactate acid is accumulating?
One: you have now idea what he was doing is tempo runs at.
Two: Ryan already said he wasnt feeling right with training before beijing, he seemed he was struggling in training (according to him).

Scroll down and see what he says for yourself
Are we sure it's not 22.3 seconds per mile?
Seriously - how do they calulate this to the .5 sec? Why not just say 'about 22 sec per mile'
his coach is giving him special shots of what he calls "god juice" which helps him glorify god at a higher rate of speed with faster recovery.
Its basic , he just feels better , we all had those good and bad patches of training and racing.
My concern is he over marathoned ? If not will Boston do him in as it has others ??
The trials in NY was his best effort ( forget time ) on a tough course. As it showed in Beijing he maybe is starting the elite fade....... any thoughts
So, as we've seen with many of our athletes that we put up on pedestals and they ever so terribly fail, I'm going to say a good race for him will be 2:05 low. Although I'd love to say that he will go fast, I'm going to be a downer real quick. How many minutes from 2:05 will Ryan Hall be? I'm going with 6, 2:11.xx.
what is the elite fade? dont' tell me you're of the believe you only have 3-4 good marathons in your lifetime. You're telling me Robert Cheriouyot and Marin Lel only have a couple good marathons in them? You're telling me Geb has nothing left? Please.
For Beijing prep it was summer (hot) and he was wearing layers to prepare.
Geb is Ethiopian.

Let's see here... he's running 3 minutes faster over 8 miles; 3 minutes is 180 seconds; 180 seconds divided by 8 comes out to be... oh, right... 22.5 seconds/mile.
And they say math isn't being taught in public schools anymore.
Yes I do think elite marathoners have a limited amount of world class marathon efforts , history does prove that. Geb and a couple of others may have shown longer windows but as whole they only have so many. Boston for some reason adds a couple of extra nails in the coffin.
Hall is obv in shape to drop a sub 2:03... time to get with the program ppl.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
