I thought they said you should do both and periodize so you don't burn out. They say you can burn out from either high mileage all the time or high intensity all the time.

Who is "they"?
Do the women's team and men's team have two completely seperate coaching staffs?

My opinion if that lower mileage is not a philosophy, yet simply a waste of time for a top-tier DI runner.
freshman year you'll probably start out around 50 mpw but depends on your high school mileage. also there are girls on the team that do about 70 so it's not neccessarily restricted to set mileage... it's about what works for you. Procaccio also stresses that being conpetitive and wanting to win will bring about fast times.
Im assuming the previous posters both go to or went to Villanova. Can you give me a little more information on the team in general. The more specific the better
Because the guys take their pictures in underwear and post them on letsrun.
the team is the greatest thing at villanova, the people are really cool and collectively have a great attitude towards running.
because the east coast has cold weather and cold personalities.
oddly enough, those were posted on the women's team page, and one girl who isn't even on the team's site.
1. O'Sullivan's decision to step down as the women's coach.
- Anytime there is a change in coaches there is the potential for transfers
- O'Sullivan and Procaccio's training philosophies are drastically different
2. From what I hear Toedbush was just very unhappy last year in general.
3. Thousands of people transfer from schools every year; Villanova gets a lot of press so it is much more noticeable.
THE BOTTOM LINE.. is if you are interested in running for a school you should take a visit and see it for yourself. I would listen to what other say but make your final decision on what you think. Lord knows that this message board is full of "haters", especially when it comes to a program like Villanova.
how are the training philosophies of O'Sullivan and Proccacio "drastically different"?
villanova girls just have sex all the time w/ people likekippy keino
First of all, from what I know, the women's team does not work with heart rate monitors. The men's team does most if not all of their training using heart rate. This is the staple of Marcus O'Sullivan's training. Also, intensity is a big difference as well. From speaking with Gina, I have gathered that the women's team pounds hard intervals, while Marcus stragetically sets up training sessions. Finally, mileage. The women's team as a whole runs very low mileage, while the same cannot be said about the men. Nobody is running the same mileage. Everyone runs what they need to run. There is no set mileage.

for Proaccio if the mileage and workouts are done at a high intensity then you don't need to run 90 miles a week
Where's the physiology to support this principle?
I heard that Gina bites for people for no reason and lives in a house made of ice cubes.
I also heard that girls leave Nova because of a guy named Joe Kuter. More cannot be said of this matter.
I know several girls that are on the team and seem very happy there.
I am a good friend of a runner that transfered from Villanova and all of this is nonsense. It does not come down to being a tough competitor and wanting to win. The one that by over a minute since she has been at Villanovtransfered from Villanova is one of the most competitive runners I know, and would do anything to win. She has PRed a and has done very well nationally. She has actually gained alot more confidence since transfering. She left because the training wasn't right for her, not because she needed a coach to comfort her. Villanova has great runners, but alot of them have incredible pre-nova PRs. I know Muncan ran really fast before she even got to Villanova. She was already a stud. Did Villanova produce her? no! The most important thing is to check out the school and the coach for yourself and use your best judgement. All the girls that transfered from Villanova have gotten much better; Klick, Gunning, Toedebush (so I doubt these girls "didn't want to be good") Two of them have even earned All-American certificates since leaving I think.
