Steve Scott became famous thru running... simmons has made his name thru coaching.. its completely different. and for webb he ran the 10k one time 27:34.72... best pro debute by any american EVER!!! subsequently, he also beat Ritz in this race.. Ritz ran his pr 27:35.65... webb ran once how many times has Rupp ran the 10k.?. anyone know i would honestly like to know?
A lot of nonsense here.
Webb ran 3:52 for a mile as a high schooler, he was top five at NCAA cross his freshman year (I believe a higher finish than Rupp had his first NCAA cross season where he was essentially a redshirt freshman). Rupp's 27:33 came in the same circumstance as Webb's. A loaded race at Stanford with nothing on the line. How old was Webb when he ran his PR? How old was Rupp? Just as Webb has not, Rupp has not gotten into a 10K with a high level of competition, ideal conditions and no pressure for place or a win since his PR race 18 months ago.
It's not about how many you have run, it's about how many chances you had to PR. At this level of running, rarely are races PR opportunities for 10K, especially during Olympic years.
If Webb was half as level headed when it comes to racing as Rupp, he would already have medals at the world championships and possibly the olympics. Rupp however will go on to crush his current (but old) prs when his focus goes to that. 27:33 could be nearly a half lap behind Rupp if he gets into a fast race in Europe, or possibly even stanford this season. Had he even run a more even race when he set his PR he would have run a lot faster, but he was out there playing for the first half and then after some insane surges he made a bid to win and did. He made 27:33 look like 28:30 should for some of our best 10K runners.
Most of Rupp's 10K's have been either conference, NCAA, US championships, world championships, Oly Trials or Olympics.
Rupp may have run 2-3 10K's outside of those? I can think of his freshman race at Oregon (debut?) of 28:15 which he ran completely alone and then his Stanford 27:33. Anyone remember that freshman 10K? If I recall correctly, he ran a very impressive negative split all alone.
