Galen Rupp vs. Scott Bauhs

Rupp is already ABLE to run 27:20 or faster, he just HASNT yet.

you'd have to say that with Bauhs mile time and background, i.e no altitude chamber, anti-grav, college coach etc that he has much more room to improve over 5km and 10km than what Rupp does, unless Rup hasn't started puberty yet, I see no reason for him to get dramatically faster. Bauhs on the other hand could take 20 secs off his 10km time, why not?

Its not always about age, its about training age, and I would say Rupp is nearly fully mature.

I think Bauhs is great. Always love to see the DII guys doing well. But, One of them is am Olympian and World Championships Qualifier in Track and one isn't and that make a world of difference.

id say scottmaster has rupp in 3k and down.

I agree with Ko Bro about Scotty having more room for improvement because of the factors he has listed. At this point though it is hard to argue who has accomplished more. I think Scott will have the more impressive career when all is said and done.

who says bauhs did not have a college coach? wasnt towne the college coach for bauhs?

I know every one has been hating on Mr. Rupp because he looks like I did when I was 12 and he's about as rockstar as any 8th grader can be. Is Scott to running what Rupp is to 8th grade? My point is I'm all for Mr Ballz improving and giving us someone to get behind. Sorry Galen, maybe if you dad had the balls to give you a mans name......

bauhs is a late-bloomer -- when he was a hs senior, he looked like a freshman or sophomore; he may still be developing a little.

in 2012, he'll be the u.s. favorite in the marathon.

if rupp is smart, he'll move up soon.

I like Scotty B a lot more than Galen.

When Galen took a semester off from college, he was flown all over the world and got worked in mile races. He was never in the middle of a single race. When Scott took a semester off, he went down to the SJ half marathon on his own dime, stapled himself to the Kenyans, and didn't give an inch.

Yes, Rupp has been to the Olympics, and he's an amazing talent, but I don't get the same "fearless" vibe I get from Bauhs. Rupp would not have won this weekend's Seagate 5k race. No way, no how. He's a great time-trialer, and a very patient runner, but he will never make the first move. And while in the NCAA you can outlast other runners and take advantage of their mistakes, that won't fly on the pro/world scene.

I think the way Rupp raced Abdi the trials showed fearlessness, and I think the way he raced at the Olympics as well showed that he was not afraid to get after that front group. I think the way Rupp raced NCAA cross this year showed how mature of a racer he is.

I'll tell you what, I once watched my 13 year old brother run a 2 mile race in 8th grade. He was not afraid to go out with the leaders, but he ended up getting 11th when all was said and done.

Point is, having no fear doesn't mean you're faster than somebody.

All valid points. I just think Bauhs has tremendous upside. Back in 2004, if you were asked to name the top 10 high school runners in the country, Rupp would probably be 1 or 2 (depending on your feelings about McDougal) and Bauhs would not even be in the conversation. Bauhs has narrowed that gap considerably over the last four years. There's no question he'll plateau eventually, but it will be interesting to see where he goes from here!

he beat a 13:0x in that seagate race. he also beat nicodemus when nicodemus was untouchable in d2. no fear is a pretty good way to describe bauhs.

bauhs ran world xc and did pretty well
