Webb almost ran a superior workout in HS, he was better as a frosh than any other OSU guy other than German, maybe, with his 11th place finish at NC's.

Who else was not impressed by the coaches responses to the nationals meet. "I dont know how to push all the right buttons." basically saying he DOESNT KNOW HOW TO COACH AND COMPETE WITH THE TOP D1 TEAMS.
I would be scared for my career if I was at OSU
maybe he's taking the presessure of then [psycology} It's all a mind game
Do the best you can
Alan Webb needs someone to tell him what this coach is
saying
You don't "have" to win just be German Fernadaz at most of your races.
YA this could be true

you do realize Vail was 11th last year, right? In a deeper field than when Webb did it as well.
Plus, considering that this was done just after the Cowboy Jamboree, I highly doubt that the OK State guys are in peak form, and I also doubt this is the hardest workout they will be doing this year.
But that's just my perspective.
I did not have result in front of me for Vail, that was an error on my part.
If he is 11th or better this year, I would figure German to be ahead of him, OSU does have a real shot, not that they did not.
yeah, if vail isn't their number 1 this year-- and it looks like he might be even their number 3-- then they are pretty deep.
It's going to be a fun race to watch between UO and OSU at nationals, that's for sure.
it's different than what used to be run for the last repeat on this workout. it used to be with the last 400m uphill. instead, the repeat is done with the last 400m essentially downhill. stop second guessing these guys, and just let them run.
I think he was being honest and cagy, he's not going to tell you everything...come on!!! besides there are unfronseens; i.e. colds, injuries, people not doing the right things, he has no control over that-the runners do, and thats what he means by luck-the things that dont play into his teams favor-I don't think its stupid, and to call it stupid you are not clearly looking at the whole approach.

yeah, we watched that this morning. as a college coach, i can understand him though. however, he said, "we'll be relying on luck." i think luck is just stupid. i appreciated the fact that he was honest, but he needs to have a plan. that's something you say to your wife, alone over dinner. you tell the team, "we are strong: we are going to have 2 front runners, followed by a pack of 3 and a pack of 2. if each of you follow your plan that we've rehearsed throughout the season, we'll achieve our objectives." although, i did enjoy his laid back style.
Is Bobby Lockhart now assisting at Oklahoma State?
Thought he was at Oklahoma with Martin Smith.
I just finished 8x800m in 1:54 ave. with the last one in 1:48!!
It was tough, but thank GOD I had five other guys pushing me.
Ahh. that may be a college XC workout that has been done for decades, and I did some of the myself. And I could (and likely did) run that kind of workout for the first five one miles stints, although maybe not in the league of a 4:27 for the fifth mile. But a final mile in 4:15 on a cross country course? Really? Pretty rare and impressive, meaning that he is considerably, and I mean considerably better than your average highly competitive college runner, which I peg at 14 min. 5k or less. (I trained back in the day with a true 28 minute 10k guy - he was a grad student then - but I don't recall him being able to rip off a 4:15 mile on a cross country course in a workout like that. (On the track, yes, he could have done so and did do it). I think anything in the top 10 in NCAA's in XC is a great run for a freshman, and would set him up wonderfully for track, but this guy is an absurd talent. He could easily finish in the top 3, and likely has more leg speed than anyone that will be with him at the end of the race. And I find it laughable there is another thread about how he should have gone to Oregon and how he needs handlers. Please, running isn't the NBA. Just get out there an run with a intelligent and attentive coach, and Fernandez seems to be doing just fine at that at OSU.
That's great, but only because the kid is a Frosh.
Our staple for years was:
5x1mile on grass (last 1/2 mile uphill) 4:36 with 4 minutes rest.
I would argue that it's pointless to run your last mile of that workout in 4:16......4:47 to 4:16....? The first 2 barely count, 4:47? come on.
Why not just do 6 at 4:25?
why doesn't 4:47 count when these kids are running around that pace for 10k (aka 6.2mi...)
Once again, the goal of a workout isn't to run it as fast as you can. THere's gotta be a purpose. Notice Dave Smith explained how he wanted them progressively faster...thus starting slow..
Just because you can run 6 at 4:25 doesn't mean you do it.

I'm not sure if there has been a thread about this, I didn't see one. I just got done watching Workout Wednesday on Flotrack from Ok St.
They did 6x1mi on their XC course and the times for German and Vail were: 4:47, 4:43, 4:37, 4:32, 4:27, 4:16.
I was impressed considering it was on their course and Fernandez looked controlled, even on the last one.
sounds like a solid workout. i'm a little partial to this john mcdonnell workout his guys would run on a typical xc weekday...
5x1 mile on grass, multiple sharp turns (1 u-turn!), 600m of significant uphill, 5 minute jog recovery back to the start...
4:25, 4:22, 4:20, 4:19, 4:18
occasional muskrat or snapping turtle sighting on the recovery.
Thats not a tough workout for him... I ran faster than that and was not nearly that good.
Who did these OSU guys beat at this workout? As they say, the teams who lose are the ones who leave their races at the workout.
BTW...Vail was not "passed over". Oregon (coach Martin Smith) wanted Vail badly at Oregon. Apparently OSU had more money to give, or Martin's tenuous position at Oregon at the time, led Vail to another program.
What is the point of doing a workout that fast? They ran their last 3 miles at 13:40 5k pace. Last time I checked, no one in the country can run 27:20 for the 10k.

What's the point of Ramzi doing 8x1000 in 2:30 with 90 seconds rest? The gold medalist needs to train a little bit smarter, and then he would improve a lot!
