I don't want him to win the trials, because if he does, it means he's going to bomb at Olys.
the only two current US runners who have ANY chance at winning a 2008 olympic medal at the 1500m are Lagat (obviously, as he's done it twice) and Webb.
if Webb doesn't make the team, we only have one chance. Manzano, Lomong, Lukezic, Rankin, Wheating, Myers, and all the rest are fodder for the prelims and semis. they have absolutely no chance at medaling, so why would you rather send them? you can't want them to gain experience, because you obviously see webb's experience as worthless. so, why would you rather Webb not make the team?
Webb, despite his current form, is 25 and, when he was 24, ran a 3:46 mile and a 1:43-high 800. he has missed no significant stretches of training since then. by the mysterious vagaries of running performance, he is not running fast right now but, there's no reason to think he'll never be capable of running those times again. will it be by this summer? i don't know. it doesn't look likely, but it's a LOT more likely than any of the other US guys (save Lagat) ever doing so in their whole career; and that's the kind of form you need to win a medal. Lagat has been there, Webb has been there, and that's it. MAYBE one of the others gets there in a few years, but this year? impossible.
so, if you have any interest in the success of the USA at 1500m in this year's olympics, you'd better hope to god that Webb makes the team (pretty likely) and recaptures his form from last year (pretty questionable). otherwise it's all up to Lagat.

Otherwise, Coach Raczko will be back to selling Asics and coaching HS freshmen.

...doesn't help our chances at 1500m, does he?
He still sells Asics (but has to push the Nikes), that's his full time gig.
He's running out of HS programs that even want him.
