Any more details? Did the mention currettage, resection or "en bloc?" The type of surgery ranges from relatively minor to massive depending on the type and aggressiveness of the lesion.
My ex-girlfriend's Dad had it, and the worst part of it for him was the loss of taste buds from the chemo. It was hard enough to eat as it was, being sick and all, and lack of tasting anything depressed him very much.
Hopefully your mother-in-law won't be going through that, but usually there's chemo involved with this type of thing.
They are taking a bone from her leg to put in where her jaw was, that is of course if her bones are strong enough. She has the bone condition that some women get, osteo whatever, and a weak heart. Its pretty bad I guess.
Sounds pretty bad. We had a guy come and talk to us in HS about smoking and chewing. He got cancer when he was 19 or something. They removed part of his jaw and tried to put in part of his fibula for a new jaw. His body didn't accept it and the whole surgery was a failure, though he lived through it. Like I say though, he was a 20 year old male.
To be blunt, the guy looked like hell and could barely talk. It was pretty hard to understand him as well. I don't know how severe your mother in law's cancer is, but anytime they take one part of your body to try to put it somewhere else, it's not good.
Sorry man.
