My memories are fading, but I distinctly remember the track that most scared the crap out of me.
Mercersburg Academy's indoor track. In their field house. One rickety old wooden-floored < 200m indoor track. I don't remember how many lanes it had...
You know what made it so special? It was a flying structure, suspended from the ceiling by metal poles. And it just didn't feel too safe. It creaked. If I remember correctly, the visiting teams' locker room was in that field house and a couple of us decided we wanted to experience a circa 1900 indoor track so we began our warmups up there. Maybe did two or three laps before we came to our senses. I remember our coach proclaiming us, "nuts."
A wobbly, creaking, wooden track, suspended from the ceiling. What could go wrong?
