like may "great" high school runners, when you arrive in college many things change. I assume that's what happened to these guys. For instance; New coaching style. You are now a small fish in a much larger pond. You are intimidated, and do not respond. Chicks and beer.
Not a single high schooler ran the equivalent of a sub-9:00 two mile? It wasn't a great year.

That was probably near the end of the dark years of US HS distance running. Some notable names further down, but the next four years would see a huge change in HS performances. And it seems to have kept going rather nicely, thankfully.
