My son looks like he has the potential to be a very good runner. I am a road racer and I really don't know how 5k road times translate to 5k cross country times. What kind of 5k time (on the road) and what kind of mile time (on the track) does it take to get a div 1 or div 2 scholarship? Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.
To fastkid: One thing coaches would look for is someone who can score points in their conference championships by the time they are a sophomore or junior. You would have to check that school's conference postings and determine what times were run (also check the times for the seeded runners as their best times may not have been run in the championship race).
The scholarship will often also be based on the potential be an All-American at that institution so meeting the NCAA provisional/automatic qualifying times is the target. IMO , a 4:17 HS miler who is willing to work consistently can eventually do all these things at many D1 schools.
I was a walk-on at a Big Ten school in the 1970s with 4:26 Mile and 9:39 2M credentials. The following year I ran a 4:15 Mile and 8:52 Two Mile and was awarded a scholarship based upon the above criteria including the understanding that I would continue to improve from there (eventually I got down to a 4:06 mile & 8:49 2 mile.) The top Big Ten runners like Glenn Herold, Craig Virgin, Pat Mandera, Steve Heidenreich, Mike Durkin, Mark Johnson, etc., of course, were much faster.
Coach Ron Helmer at Indiana has a web site wherein you can contact him and complete a form detailing best times. I assume other coaches do this. I am sure they would like to hear about your son's ability.
