Would it be smart to run with achilles tendonitis while also doing physical therapy exercises to strenghten the achilles?
Would it be smart to run with achilles tendonitis while also doing physical therapy exercises to strenghten the achilles?
If it hurts, then the obvious answer is NO.
I am always on my guard for even the slightlest twinge around my achilles. When they appear, I massage the tendon and lower calf, and this is very effective in preventing injury. Prevention is better than cure.
Where achilles problems are concerned, you should err on the side of caution, to prevent the problem dragging on for months, or ending your running altogether.
yeah if you have pain don't run. it will just make it worse and a deeply ingrained case of AT can take months to get over.
Don't mess with the Achilles. Don't run on it if it hurts.
that would be the worst thing you could do. wait until its fully healed. if i were you i would even go so far as to reduce walking and cycling. Do your excercise in the pool until its FULLY healed. beleive me u dont want to fcuk with AT
Not a good idea to try to run through. I found that I could do things like elliptical and walking, but running was out. NEED to concentrate on loosening your calves and wait until there is no pain. Acupuncture worked wonders for me. Good luck - this is one you have to be very conservative with, or it could linger for months or even years.
6 months ago i had bad pain of the achilles. I used something called the Achilles Healer - Achilles Tendon Straphttp://pattstrap.com/achilles-healer-tendon-strap-p-29.html
I highly suggest you have a look as it worked very well and was comfortable.
Not sure if it's "smart" but the only time I was free of achilles pain (and I have chronic issues with it) was when I was doing higher mileage. I tried the rest and recovery thing...I would rest and strengthen for weeks, and come back, only to have the pain even worse than before. Eventually I just got sick of it, ran through it for a while, and it went away almost completely. Lately, running on grass almost exclusively really helped it (perhaps an ankle strength issue was fixed by the uneven surface). I would even go so far as to say it is cured these days (knock on wood).
you probably need to cut back on your running, if not stop completely, temporarily. do cross training in the meantime.
where is your pain exactly? (how many centimeters up from the bottom of your heel).
when do you have the pain? during running only? in the morning? does it hurt first during a run, then get better during the run?
I basically just took 6 weeks off with achilles. It wasn't even inflamed, or hurting, unless I tried running. The pain was worst at the start of a run, and it dissipated a bit later on. But 8:30 miles feeling uncomfortable was no fun. I needed time off. The pain was about an inch above the top of the ankle. It was "squeeky" when I felt it and moved the foot around.
So, I walked, and when things felt better, I often did a "silly walk", where I exaggeratingly toed off - good exercise. And a recently acquired balance board has really helped.
Tomorrow I'll do 400m. yes, 400m! :) Then add 400m to each run I do in Dec, thereby hopefully getting to 10km by the end of Dec. All of this will be track running. I want no hills, or "committed distances" around a big loop, far from home.
I have my theories about how I got this, and the main one is....I got shoes that had a lower heel, and trained hard in them. Now I'm back to the higher heeled shoes.
I'm convinced that I'm OK now, but I needed the time off, plus the exercises and balance board.
All the best to the O.P.
