man that gave me goosebumps
That's exactly why he has long impressed me while some of the prima donnas (like those who raced nationals and then skipped Mombasa) fall well short.
A fitting race number for a true champion.
Not to take anything away, but may have been the only place he could represent the US
RIP
He also went to the World Championships in 2003.
Shay was 100th in Mombasa, by the way.
Didn't Shay make a WC team in the marathon?
yes, he made teams that the halls, ritzs, and meb did not
rip
So what? The "halls, ritzs, and meb" think they're too good to accept the opportunity, good on Shay for not having that mindset.
"300"....whoa...good point.
pardon my ignorance, but why is 300 fitting?
ignorance?...
THIS
IS
LETSRUN!!!
I heard that Shay was casted for "300" but instead of having the standard 8-pack stomach, Ryan had a 12-pack. And since Leonitas was already taken they couldn't find an approptriate spot for him.
I heard Ryan Shay ate Jason Rexing's trainers and shit out Chuck Norris.
which came first the chicken or the egg?
If shay were capable of running a sub 2:10
He'd do what the rest do
do whats in their best interest...
You do realize that the olympics are a financial windfall for these guys...
You put 60k up to finish first american at a WC, and some of these big guns will show up...
So money is the ONLY reward that is esteemed in the sport anymore? Sad.
Which race is that from again ? What was Shay's time ?

Umm, it's how they make a living, moron. It's not like they have a free weekend anyway, but they won't show up without getting paid. They can run 2-3 marathons a year and they basically need to make 4-6 months' salary on each of them. If they don't, they're in the red. Are there really runners who still haven't figured that out?
Shay and the other second-tier guys can raise their profile by running championship races. Basically at that level it's good business to do so, because with a good result they'll make more appearance money next time.
