Is this theory true? if a 170lb runner trains at 8min mile pace, will a 20lb loss result in the runner being capable of mileing at 7min pace with the same effort? Obviously over a period of time this would occour not in a month or two.

No. That is BS. This spring I ran 9 seconds off my 1500 PR when I was 20+ pounds heavier than my college weight. According to your logic I should be able to lose about 15 of those pounds and set the WR.
i was more talking about 10mile runs in training where you you can run at a pace which you can talk at.
i think that only applies to easy pace so the 1500 thing is not really relevant in this discussion.
I thought there was a calculator someplace where you could compute how much speed you would gain over a distance ie 10K by a corresponding loss in weight? I have been trying to find it online. This is the closest thing I have come up with thus far.

So if you are 25 years old and weigh 170 and can run the 10K in 40:00, you could hypothetically run a 37:47 if you weighed 143...
Here is another calculator...
Predicted effect of weight change
1 lb = 12 seconds over the 10K distance for someone 170 lbs.

Dang, you beat me to it. Since this question comes up so often though I think I'll make my own thread on it so people can find it without asking others.
I did not realize that weight loss had such a dramatic effect on someone near 170. Time for me to shed some lbs...
