S-E-L-L = 4 letters. For 4 guys. G-A-Y = 3 letters. for 4 guys...?? According to my calculations that wouldn't work out so well.
I think it was a fabulous idea! Way to show support!!
(PS: you are kind of hot, any of you still live in CA??)
you retard, you could put the letters G-A-Y-! on 4 people. learn how to read fag.
It was awesome. Just some guys having a good time and showing support. I thought is was great!!!
my steeple time was better than any hippies open 3k...end quote
oh and i tried to give sell a fist pound at after the marathon and he gave me a fist squeeze, i will never wash my gloves again!!!
Stop being haters. There is nothing wrong with painting your chest. It's funny and it's GREAT that people get as excited for RUNNING as much as people get excited for baseball, football, etc.

I was one of the 4 shirtless sell fans today at the trials. I am looking for photos of the 4 of us, if anyone has any please throw a link on or send me an e-mail
Good thing you weren't Freudenberg fans.
These guys were awesome! For all the haters...were you there? I was running along the course with the S-E-L-L boys yelling BRIAN-SELL to the crowd before the leaders came by between 24-25. Everyone was going crazy and the atmoshere was electric! They weren't even from Michigan, I think they said they were from Maine and just fans of Brians and fans of the sport.
What a great place to have the trials. Congrats to Brian!!!
NO lech.fan.
Your steeple was a full 2 seconds off my open 3k so back off.

You guys should be proud. I even overheard Kevin Hanson bragging about you guys and how great to see that kind of support. If he thought it was a good thing, then it was. Ignore the anonymous bashers.
As a fellow shirtless Sell fan all I can say is that is was a hellava fun time and the man himself seem to love it. I could care less of what anyone else thinks.

You could care less what anyone else thinks. That means you DO care. At least a little bit.
I didn't know the circus was in town for the Trials; it's not often one sees four shirtless midgets running around.
Although, based on the photos, could the "S" have been none other than Patrick Wales-Dinan, aka ISLrunner, of Milton Academy and Bates College fame? Wales-Dinan was known for many Sell-esque performances in his own day, such as this result from the 2002 Hayseed Classic at Tufts University:
Event 1 Men's 8,000 Meter Run
62 Patrick Wales-Dinan Bates College 32:46.7
Much like Sell in the Olympic trials, Wales-Dinan fought hard all the way to the finish of the 2002 Hayseed Classic. At 4 miles, a hard-charging race-walker moved ahead of Wales-Dinan into 62nd place. But Patrick didn't panic - just as Sell didn't panic when he found himself in a distant 7th place 15 miles into the Trials. Instead, Wales-Dinan dug deep, moved back into 62nd place, and closed his race with a gutsy sub-7:00 final mile.
Also like Sell, Wales-Dinan's work ethic was the stuff of legend. Not once did he complain about early-morning pool workouts, nor did he ever throw a temper-tantrum when asked to participate in his team's 4x800m relay at the 2003 USM Invitational. Residents of Lewiston, Maine often recall watching Wales-Dinan run by their living room windows, in the dead of winter, as he logged upwards of 15 miles per week during the indoor track season. Indeed, it seems that Wales-Dinan and Sell are nothing less than kindred spirits! How fitting that Wales-Dinan traveled to cheer his soul-mate on to Olympic glory!
;) Seriously, I had a bit too much fun with this. Way to inject some energy into the crowd! You guys are awesome, and anyone who thinks otherwise is G-A-Y-!

I read the story of Wales-Dinan with a tear running down my cheek. Nice job Joel. You gay guys with the letters were great. I mean so what if these guys dig guys? It's not hurting anyone (unless they're stalkers of course - you guys are stalkers are you?). Let them have fun (although I thought that Sell was married?)
thanks, Joel...That was most def the race I remember from my great time in college.
