I just don't get all the discussion about Hansons using team tactics. How do you use team tactics in a marathon when your guy isn’t the favorite? It's not like it’s an option to wait and kick if you're Meb or Abdi or Ritz or Hall just because you've got superior 5K speed.
Does it mean that the slower Hansons guys will take the pace out way too hard to try to get the favorites to go out with them and drop? I doubt any of the favorites are going to chase anyone but each other. On top of that, isn't one’s actual marathon pace hard enough? How long can a 2:20 guy hold 2:05 pace?
The whole discussion confuses me. I don't think there are really any team tactical racing possibilities for Hansons. Now, maybe a favorite will bonk or be sick or get injured or go out too hard of his own accord, but barring these things, each guy either has the fitness or not right? The marathon is always a race of attrition right? What am I missing?
