At the risk of sounding inhumane, wouldn't it be a greater deterrent to crime if convicted criminals simply got thrown in a hole with minimal sustenance and nothing more? I simply don't understand why...
• They can have visitors (who might transport contraband) or any contact with the outside world.
• They are allowed to have any items that can be transformed into weapons.
• They are allowed to watch TV or read anything that isn’t legitimately educational.
• They are allowed recreation time (if they need exercise they can do hard labor).
The list goes on. No one denies that prison is generally rough and dangerous (and I can’t say that from personal experience), but in the grand scheme of things it is still too “soft” to influence would-be criminals from making the wrong choices.
Oscar Wilde was sentenced to hard labor that more-or-less killed him. And for what, being a homosexual? Yet scum like Charles Manson live off the state in relative comfort as a reward for leading mass murders.
