Webb
gary reed and nick will both beat webb.
jeez Reed is skinny
webb will PR
I agree that Webb has a good chance at a PR, but I doubt that he will finish better than 3rd or 4th in this race.
I think that Webb would rather run 1:44 and finish fourth than finish first and run a second or two slower. I doubt many here will disagree.
He's going for the win, you dolt.
Otherwise he'd just enter another low key meet and have a fast rabbit through 600m. He's racing to win. Running a PB is great for high schoolers and middle-aged 5k runners. Winning is what he's after.
I'm sure he's aware that in order to win this type of race he needs to run 1:43. Which, coincidentally, would be a PB. Isn't it funny how that works out?

I think this race is more about running a fast time and less about the win, also.

He never said he wasn't going for the win. He simply said that it probably wasn't Webb's main focus and I think that's true. Obviously, Webb would like to win, but he's in a race with a lot of guys that have faster prs. If he wins and prs, that's awesome, but if he loses, he's still probably going to pr. This race is pretty much a win win. Races like this are obviously about winning, but they are also about focusing on tactics/position and speed for the more important races. A lot more comes from running in a race like this than a time trial.

You're argument can be flipped both ways. If he's only racing to win, why not race in the B section to ensure victory. Sometimes victory isn't the only way to measure success. Running a pr and getting 4th would still be a successful outing in a race like this, which is what 26mi235 was trying to say.
It's interesting that the IAAF is making such a big deal out of this race. It shows that Webb is becoming a star to the Euros.

Not many races have been going under 1:44 recently - it's become pretty common for large-scale European 800's to be won in the 1:44.5 to 1:45.0 range. If Webb goes under 1:45 (a reasonably big "if"), I think he has a decent shot at the win. Hard to imagine him not setting a PB, at any rate.
Webb's mile time says he is in sub-1:45 shape; he probably will not win, but I expect him to be competitive and in the top 3-4
Webb is like the Beta Cloud monster right now. It is futile to try to compete with him.
In all seriousness he is probably in 1:44 condition.
I imagine, and I can only imagine, that winning is more important to Webb than setting a new PB. He's gearing up for Osaka, and learning to win different races with different tactics seems like a more important item on his agenda than having faster PB's than everyone else in the field (he's already accomplished that anyway).
Just because some of the men in this upcoming race have faster PB's doesn't mean that Webb should bow down to them before the race, that's idiotic.
I'm predicting that his plan is more about winning than running a time - he's evaluating tactics, not race splits. If he checks his watch at 400m than we'll know he's going for the time only.
And finally, Webb doesn't have to go down to a 'B' heat to win a middle distance race anymore, those days are behind him. And I'm willing to bet that the way he hits the weights and can maintain his speed that he's capable of running 1:43 right now.
It is not possible to perdict what Webb does.
You better watch out or I'll perdict you in the face.
1. No one said that he should bow down to competitors
2. No elite runners check their watch 400m into an 800m
3. This isn't his event. He is doing it to be better at the 1500m. Going out in 1:50 is a lot easier if you've run 1:44 (so is closing in 25 for the last 200m). So really, he isn't doing it for a good time, or a win, but for training, so that he can win when it matters.
Beta Cloud, I have not seem that episode in 30 years. Love that 70s style music.
