Below is just a brief outline of what I went through over the past five years. I'd be happy to go into further detail if anyone is interested.
Senior year of high school:
* Got into running, had no lasting problems. PR's were 18:41 5km in XC and 5:02 1600m in track.
Freshman year at MSU:
* Still blissfully ignorant of problems. Wasn't training hard yet. Peaked in talent. Pr's were 29:42 5mi, 17:37 5km, 24:12 4mi.
Sophomore year at MSU:
* Training harder. Started getting achilles tendonitis while wearing Nike Air Max shoes.
* Specialist diagnosed me with overpronation. Recommended Brooks Addiction motion control shoes. Tendonitis went away. But shoes too stiff for my legs. Running became uncomfortable.
Summer in between MSU and UofM:
* Found that New Balance stability shoes were good for my legs and I didn't get tendonitis. Trained with other college runners. PR's: 4:56 mile, 66:00 ten mile tempo run.
Junior year at UofM:
* Participated in the running club. Dreams of getting onto Michigan's varsity. Overpronation got worse. For the first time, took several weeks off from running because I was destroying my feet. It was looking like my running days were over.
* In the second semester I discovered orthotics and those gave me temporary respite. Participated in the indoor track season, ran some decent times.
* Legs and ankles started weakening again with the mileage. Again, looked like I was done for good.
Summer before junior year at UofM:
* Discovered Pose. Seemed promising until my ankles started wearing out over the course of a oouple of months.
* Discovered a far better way of running than either Pose or the "normal" way. A form where you rise up off the ground before your feet go behind your waist. Eliminates the kick behind you.
* Impact of landing still crushing my feet, causing severe overpronation. Not even the orthotics could help.
Senior year at UofM:
* Went through several months of alternating between resignation and desperately grasping for ideas to try. Doctors all told me my running days were over. I had destroyed my feet.
* Middle of spring, discovered that I could do a little bit of running using my new efficent form on grass fields barefoot without causing problems. Also discovered that I could use my form on sidewalks with shoes as long as I didn't roll from my heels to my ankles (ie: land on heel of shoe, rise off ground).
Summer after senior year
* Even since then (4 months or so), I've been gradually training and improving myself back into shape. This past summer I've been averaging about 45 mpw.
*In some ways, I'm finally back at my peak and doing time trials. A week ago I ran a 10:51 two mile (5:15, 5:36) and just last night I ran a 5:02 mile. These were all done barefoot on a grass course behind my high school.
That was it. I wish someone had told me what I know now five years ago.
