Nope. Looks like the U.S. team will have to cancel their trip to the nuclear power plant several hundred miles from Osaka.
You’ve been watching too many Simpson episodes.
Even if the American team actually visited the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant and started acting as ham-fistedly as Homer, they’d be in little physical danger.
In by far the world’s worst nuclear disaster, Chernobyl, and I’m sure the Japanese example is rather better designed, 23 of the initial staff and emergency personnel fighting the fire died after receiving high doses of radiation and another 19 (up to 2004) have died since. (No one died at Three Mile Island.)
In the 30 kilometre exclusion zone, (to humans that is) far from creatures such as Homer’s famous three eyed fishes making an appearance - naturalists have been amazed to discover that the zone is now teeming with rare animals and indigenous plants, including eagles, moose, deer, wild boar and 250 species of birds. "I've seen wolves in broad daylight and once even heard the bark of an endangered lynx, species which disappeared from the area long before the disaster," One of the naturalists stated.
Like it or not, with no natural resources as far as energy is concerned, the Japanese have little option but to build nuclear power stations for the foreseeable future. At least a small discharge of nuclear waste, is a lot less polluting, atmosphere-wise, than the huge coal-powered generators the Chinese are bringing on line about every two weeks,
Actually an extra leg or two could be very beneficial for our distance runners in their quest to catch the Africans!
Can you believe they held the Olympics in Lake Placid after Three Mile Island?
Before 3 or 4-legged humans are allowed to compete in sanctioned races, the IAAF will have to conduct extensive videotape review to ensure said participants are not gaining an unfair advantage over their 2-legged competitors.
