is named (by internet poll) as the actual home state of the Simpsons.
I know the Simpsons are just a cartoon, but I am bothered by this on so many levels. Part of the mystique of the show was that their home state was cleverly withheld.

How the hell does this effect the "mystique" if it's an internet poll?
The article reads Springfield, VT won the contest over the rest of the Springfields to world premier the movie...not the actual location

I would have hoped so too.
http://digg.com/movies/Springfield_VT_named_Simpsons_official_homeMan these ads are getting kinda scary...Simpson Ring Tones on a Simpson thread? Pretty soon they're going to know my innermost thoughts, yikes!
That being said I've just got to get a Barney belch mixed in with a Duoh!
actually, in one episode, it was revealed that the simpsons live in northern kentucky.

"VH1: Behind the Laughter"
Actually, it was just titled "Behind the Laughter." No "VH-1," but it was a parody of "VH-1: Behind the Music."

Okay, I'm a self-admitted Simpson nerd, but I love the show. There are a few things to consider regarding the Simpsons' locale.
Based on Matt Groening's life, one would think that the family is from Springfield, OR. On closer inspection though, using clues from the shows, and basic geography, it would point to Springfield, IL.
The reasons are simple. The radio station that broadcasts out of the Simpson's hometown has a K as its first call-letter. This indicates that their hometown would have to be west of the Mississippi. Radio stations east of the Mississippi use W as their first call-letter.
Secondly, Springfield, IL is the only Springfield in the US with the closest (about 45-50 miles southeast) town named Shelbyville.
springfield va.......when the simpson fly what airport do they leave out of??? Dulles airport.

Springfield, IL is east of the Mississippi, right?

But I am listening to KDKA from Pittsburgh, PA. Pittsburgh is east of the Mississippi so what's up with that?
the springfield used in the show seems like a combination of a lot of the different springfields around the country, like the nuclear plant from Mass, the shelbyville thing from IL, and a host of other details which i can't really remember. it is not based entirely on one specific springfield though.
i agree
based on reading all of this, it looks like he used combinations from all the springfields...maybe to confuse people, or just maybe as a joke. i never really noticed it until now
Re: Springfield, Mass (my hometown), Mayor Quimby was based on Senator Ted Kennedy- both in the way he spoke and his vacationing at the "Quimby Compound". The real Kennedy gamely appeared in the Massachusetts video for that city's effort in the contest.
The nuclear plant in Rowe, Mass. (Rowe Yankee) closed in 1992. It was one of the nation's earliest commercial nuclear plants (3rd), opening in 1961. There remains a Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon, VT, which coincidentally is nearly equidistant between both Springfields VT. and Mass. (about 50 miles each way).
Re: the contest: VT definitely had the funniest video. It was like a mini-Simpsons episode.
The last thing I have to say is: Springfield RULES!
in the episode with the civil war reanactment the town wears the union blue
Springfield, Mo has:
- A drive through safari
- Lake Springfield
- Used to have a statue of a local hero in the town square (like Jebadia Springfield).
- Has a rich guy named John Q. Hammons that owns everything (like Montgomery Burns)
- Two large power plans (not nuclear though)
For the MO thought, there is an episode where Superintendent Chalmers is talking to Principal Skinner and says Springfield Elementary was named the most dilapidated school in all of Missouri. After a shocked look by Skinner, and Lisa i think, he said, That's when it was picked up and moved here, brick by brick.
There are some good teases too. Like when Herb Powell goes to the train station to buy a ticket to Springfield, and the ticket window guy asks: "Springfield, Illinois?"
Herb says: "No.",
ticket window guy: "Springfield, Massachusetts?" Herb: "No, Springfield..." and then his answer is obscured by a passing train.
Here's one of many sites that compiled the clues:
