nice to see a somewhat comprehensive piece from a major source on alan and the great success he is having.
The article mentions running a mile in Belgium on July 21. This is strange, because this is the same day as the Madrid Grand Prix meet. Also, I can't find any mention of such a Belgian meet at iaaf.org. If there is a meet, it's strictly a local affair. How could Webb make a mile record attempt w/o any competition?
Thanks!
Webb mentioned in his post-race comments at Paris that his next race was an 800 in Ghent (no date given) and I can't find any info on that either. Anyone have links to either of these meets?
July 15
That is a very nice sized piece on Webb. I'd like more...I mean he's the hottest 1500 meter runner right now!
OK, with european-athletics.org I found the Ghent and Brasschaat meets. Why is Webb screwing around with this? After all, he should be able to command an impressive appearance fee at a major meet. How will he make a mile record attempt w/o any competition. Does not compute...
I'm not trying to stir up shit (no, really!). I just want to hear what everyone thinks of this quote:
"It seemed like this particular runner...might be doing a lot of junk miles. "Where is the value in that?" Raczko asked. "How is that going to help him in the future?"
I'm amazed that this has not been dissected here, either pro or con. Thoughts?

well, considering that the reporter omitted almost every detail that would give us context for that quote AND called it "BSing," i'd say we shouldn't look too deeply into it.
if you really want to pick it apart, though, raczko is definitely a coach that espouses a gradual progression of volume. perhaps they were discussing a younger guy who was already doing very high mileage with intensity and raczko felt this would burn the guy out.
That makes some sense, it seems like Raczko has Webb improving at a good clip and shows some control in keeping tabs on Webb's up and downs. Also, when you read stories like this, realize that Tim Layden is one of the biggest (or only) T&F supporters in the mainstream (big time, anyway) media.
