Ritz also had a problem finishing in the NYC marathon. Based on his half marathon in England a few weeks before New York, Ritz looked good to run around 2:09-2:10 (at least) in NYC but faded to a 2:14. That was in fall 2006.
Flash forward to end of June 2007, and Nationals/10.000 where Ritz is up there with Abdi until the last 3 laps, and then starts to fade, taking over 2:30 to cover the final two laps, and the last lap in 77 secs! Big problem.
Yes - it was hot/humid - but many championship races are run in hot/humid conditions.
Ritz is a great runner, but it is of concern that he had problems like that at the end of a race on the track.
After his great two mile race a few weeks ago, I thought Ritz would have a good chance to win the Nationals at 10.000. Even in hot humid conditions, I thought Ritz was capable of running 27:50-28:10 on a hot/humid evening.
Abdi is a great runner, but I don't think he is capable of running 8:11 for 2 miles. Ritz was the one.
Ritz needs to get this problem sorted out. Because many races are run in adverse conditions. Very fit athletes tend to adapt to the heat - even runners from Nordic countries can adapt over time. Ritz has to find out why his body shuts down more than others (at the elite level) in a race such as this one. Fading can happen, but to the extent that Ritz faded is unusual and of concern.
