When runners quit competing, what do they do next?
they stop being neurotic, they eat junk food when they crave it, they don't psych themselves out about all the little things that they think will affect their performance, and they are now more humble as well as more prepared to face challenges that life throws at them.

They become joggers...
Nobody ever makes you sign a retirement agreement. You can keep running, maybe jump in an occasional race just for fun, and someday you may choose to compete again. Or not.

Ummm actually they did. I had to sign a contract with a non-compete clause, soooo I am out for the next ten years. It was a very stiff stipulation, so that does it for me. True story.
try another sport
They sit around and talk about all of their training, races and regrets. Basically they live in the past and don't look ahead too much.
