As a few of us are going to be in town this weekend for the inaugural marathon, what sites are worth visiting? Where are the best places to run? I'll be staying relatively near to the stadium. Thanks for any recommendations.

Hayward Field.
Pre's running trails.
1) Catch a dinner at Mazzi's, which is out by the Amazon chip trail near South Eugene H.S.
2) Eugene Running Company, which is
3) In the sam complex as a Trader Joe's, which is
3) Just down the street from a Ben & Jerry's
4) Head to the coast (1.5 hour drive) for clam chowder at Mo's in Florence
5) Breakfast at the Original Pancake House (down Franklin Blvd. from the U of O) or at Humble Bagel (over by South Eugene H.S
You'll be plenty carbo loaded with these stops.
i.e. the city streets of portland?
per Malmo in a previous post, there are more strip joints per sq. mile in Eugene, than in Vegas. (paraphrasing).
The last time I was there was for the Junior Olympics and didn't have much time for many other activities, but running at Hayward Field and on Pre's Trails was nice. Don't forget to visit Pre's Rock so you can form your own conspiracy theory about his death.

That would be Portland, where take the term "strip mall" literally.
The Oregon Supreme court recently ruled that live sex shows are protected "speech" by the Oregon Constitution.
"Justice Michael Gillette, who wrote the majority opinions, said it "appears to us to be beyond reasonable dispute that the protection extends to the kinds of expression that a majority of citizens in many communities would dislike — and even to physical acts, such as nude dancing or other explicit sexual conduct that have an expressive component."
http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=15861sorry.....I remembered it wrong....Portland makes more sense, as I've been to Eugene for meets many times and sure don't remember many strip joints. I heard that Toronto has alot of good ones, too.

The euphemism in Eugene used to describe sallies to venues to worship the aesthetic symmetry of the naked female form is "going out West."

If you're wanting ice cream, you gotta go to Prince Pückler's, which is one block from Hayward field anyway (19th & Agate; where the marathon course makes its first left turn).
The marathon course also shows off Hayward Field, Pre's Trail, Autzen Stadium, and the Amazon Trail, so the only real landmark left is Pre's Rock. That's at Birch and Skyline.
Volunteer for a day helping out the meth addicts. Eugene is Meth Town USA.
The U.S. has a Puritan culture: violence is good, sex is bad.
Canada has a European culture: sex is good, violence is bad.
That\'s the difference.
1. Saturday Market, downtown Eugene 10-4 p.m. A must.
2. Breakfast at the Keystone Cafe--good food (breakfast), inexpensive, a trip back to the 60's.
3. Fifth Street Public Market--shopping, (go to Nike Store to view Prefontaine/Bowerman exhibit)
4. Hendricks Park (near Pre's rock)
5. Hayward Field, of course.
6. Breakfast at Valley River Inn (overlooks river). HQ for Prefontaine Classic athletes. Nice river walk too.
7. Oregon Wine Warehouse, downtown, if you're into wine.
8. Fine Dining: Red Agave, Adam's Place, Marche. Great hamburger--Midtown Cafe.
9. Sam Bond's Garage--Bar/pub/music
Hayward obviously, and if your're motivated Spencer's Butte can be spectacular at sunrise, it's just south of Eugene. It's a short hike. And then you can hit up ridgeline for a tough, but really fun run. Some of my favorite trails. Can get a bit muddy though, so be careful.
After the race treat yourself to lunch at the Steel Cafe right across the street from the Nike store. Lots of beer selections and the food is great.
if you get bored you can always go rpb tracktown pizza.
Is there something I am missing about Pre's trails? I am not trying to slam, just to understand. Are these the woodchip/bikepath networks north of the river? If so I'm not sure what the big deal is about these because it seems like any suburban/urban bike path type setup. Is there more to it somewhere?
I've only been to Eugene once (back in the early 90s for the USATF meet), but am hoping to get back for the Trials next summer.
I seem to remember a great place to drink good beer that wasn't far from Hayward. It seemed to be south of the stadium. Sound right??
Other good watering hole suggestions?? After watching track & field, drinking good NW beer will be pretty high on my list of "things to do."
