What is an average resting heart rate for a distance runner, and for an average person? what is an exceptionally low heart rate?
What is an average resting heart rate for a distance runner, and for an average person? what is an exceptionally low heart rate?
distance runner probably 59-62.. good distance runner 53+-
average person 65-73
exceptionally low: 35-43 .. lowest recorded is about 35
are you just curious? or are you trying to base training off of something. Because you shouldnt base training off your resting HR
Mine is mid - low 40s most mornings and I am by no means a superior athlete. A lot of Of people are under 40 and I have heard of 29!
There are all sorts of variables to consider. Age, fitness level, volume, phase of season etc. Generally, you can see about a 20% drop in resting heart rate from that of a healthy, sedentary person to a well-trained (not overtrained) distance runner. Saying something like a distance runner should probably have a resting heart rate of 45 is arbitrary at best. Some runners, typically longer distance types, are more likely to have low RHR, but it's not a guarantee. Jim Ryan had a resting throughout his career and post around 70 bpm, whereas various ordinary runners have had very low resting heart rates with no appreciable difference in their ultimate performance abilities. On a similar note, athletes like Karl Keska hvae low maxes, so, saying something like his resting heart rate is 40 may sound impressive until you find out his max is 160. Yet, a runner who has a resting heart rate of 40 with a max of 210 displays much more of an absolute range from resting to max HR. That's why I note that you should think in terms of percentages, not absolute numbers.
...lowest recorded 35? oh please....its waaaay lower than that around 21-22...
Mine's mid to high forties when I first wake up and between 50-60 during the day
Currently mine is about 80. But i\'m a little hungover.... and exhausted...
Normally though its in the 70\'s. I\'ve run a sub 4:10 mile in the past 3 weeks and i\'m in pretty decent shape.
i've never done a real test for my max, but after workouts i've measured it to be above 200
Another runner at my college had 29. I was only mid/high 40's, but a) I was a much crappier athlete, and b) my "natural" (pre-training) pulse was probably considerably higher.
OTOH, Jim Ryun's resting pulse was famously something over 60 (I will stand correction by JR or jtupper or any other knowledgeable person).
The "average" among distance runners? Maybe 50? Who knows?
in the low 30's when I wake up....not elite.
It is a meaningless number.
As others had said it varies greatly. You can use it to mark your own progress but that's really as far as it goes. Comparing it to others is meaningless.
Mine has almost always been around 50. When I was 18 and was told this meant I was in good condition I was very happy and confident. Unfortunately I was slow as molasses. All that supposed potential never paid off. Now I'm in my 40s and I'm a little faster and the resting heartrate is the same and I've come across many fast people who have always had a resting rate of about 70.

I agree.
If you sleep well at night, have good energy levels for your training, are alert during the day; then your heart rate will be fine.

Dude, I've often had 36-38! :)
I have been running for over forty years and was never ELITE but had some fast times and have always had a very low resting heart rate. Low 30's upper 20's and something you have to be very careful with is going to a Dr who does not work with Athletes. Almost everytime I go for some sort of testing the Dr flips out about my heart rate and wants me to go to a Heart Specialist who wants to do all kinds of tests. I had my knee operated on years ago and in the morning the nurse came in took my pulse and called the crash cart. Most dr's have no ides how to treat someone who is in shape. So be carefull.
Mines 34 in the morning but i'm not elite. 15:58 5k runner.
I'm 51 and on vacation in Cuba my resting pulse was 36.
