did anyone read the question asked? seems like most people are responding about distance running and marathon running. the few mentions of sprinters seem to be simply analogies to back up the distance running analysis.
the question says "in running events"? i'm not sure if the OP meant to include hurdles. if so, i think there have been many successful tall 400 hurdlers. the other event with many successful tall runners is the 800. both are long sprints. less of a premium on quick starts; more of a premium on sustaining nearly top speed. being tall is thus not much of a disadvantage while conferring some advantage.
the 1500 in a time trial setting might be similarly suited to tall people. however, in a true race, with pace changes on a dime, a longer stride will likely cause some disadvantage. plus the injury factor in the greater mileage in training comes into play more with the 1500.
overall, i'd say that being shorter is a benefit in the short sprints, height is mostly irrelevant in the 400, a slight benefit in the hurdles (esp the 400) and the 800, and a negative as the distance increases.
