At the time of Pre's death the only way to buy Nike in my area was from the trunk of a local coaches car;they had not yet reached sporting goods stores(there were no running stores then). Most people in my county wore either Tiger Montreals or adidas country. i had always thought that Nike became huge after Reebok became big with those silly aerobic shoes that every yuppette wore on the subway and Nike fought back with perceived campaign of high quality shoes, and of course MJ.
Why do you even pose this question? Did Brooks make Mark Curp or did Mark Curp make Brooks? Did Lasse Viren make Onitsika Tiger (now Asics) or did Tiger make Lasse Viren? Did indoor track make Dick Beurkle or did Dick Beurkle make indoor track ?(throw Eamon Coughlin in there too)Did idiot who cares type questions make Letsrun or did Letsrun make idiotcare type questions?

Curp ran in New Balance.

there is nothing to blow out of proportion. He held all of the American records between 3k and 10k at the time of his death. Scoreboard. The charisma part and whether you loved his spirit and attitude, is another matter, open to debate; but his records are not 'legend' or the fact that he never lost any NCAA race after X-C of his frosh year. and it took the great Gerry Lindgren, as a senior to do it!
it was 2k to 10k.
Pre's parents made Pre.
Pre's hard work made Pre fast.
Pre's efforts made Pre famous.
Beer, a fast car, a winding road and a rock made Pre a legend.
This made Nike:
Second best Nike commercial ever. Maybe the second greatest commercial ever. Too bad it was only shown on tv once, during the 96(?) Olympics.
Sorry, here it is: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0xLKvQTZtLU
I was 16 in 1975. Pre was popular and we knew he wore Nike's. Good running shoes were hard to find back then unless you lived in a big city.
Pre was popular. No, he wasn't the topic of a massive ad campaign. He was simply a great runner that anyone who understood what it takes to be a great runner admired.
I remember the 72 Olympic 5000. My friends and I went nuts watching that last lap. People called it "Prefontaining" when you went for it like he did. No hype, that is how we saw it.
I remember Bruce Dern (the running actor in this month's RW) interviewed in RW years ago after making that movie with running in it and he said that he thought the last lap of the Munich 5000 was the best part of any race ever and it made the race the best ever. He admired Pre for making the last lap what it was.
No hype from Nike or anyone, it was how we felt. Did everyone love him? No, one of my friends, who grew up to be a big jerk, thought he "sucked" because he didn't win the Olympics. Wouldn't he fit in with some of the sophmoric posters who have to continually put down Pre, Ritz, Rupp, et al because they cannot beat Bekele?
Did Nike make Pre? No, he made himself and they kept him alive. Did Pre make Nike? He was the first athlete they paid to wear their product- so he helped.
OK, that's it, end of story
good post dude!
Thank you.
To us outside the US this Pre obsession is completely incomprehensible. The finns are not obsessed by Lasse Viren, and he won 4 olympic golds.
I can't explain it, I am not obsessed with Pre, but I admire him. I do wish that Nike, etc would do this for living current runners.
As far as not understanding obsession over sports. Europeans and Latin Americans who riot over sports have nothing on Americans.
