And the Instant Karma commercial....
MJ made Nike, Nike made pre long after his death
Pre made Nike. Nike would have been pretty big i'm sure wether Pre had signed on or not i think. but Pre was a star at the time of Nike's creation, and there's no doubt kids around the US started atleast looking into trying nike's after seeing that Pre ran in Nikes. in the beginning years i think there's no way you can count Pre out of Nike's success. a lot of the networking with atheletes that ran for nike was done by Pre. It was Pre who sent Bill Rodgers his first pair of Nike's.
Sam how old were you in May of 1975?
well my mom was 15, i may be a bit off about nike's popularity in the 70's i'm sure it was still a small company, but there's no way that Pre couldn't have helped Nike gain popularity in the early days.
neither....he died too soon to have had a big affect on NIKE and their success and vice versa.
Nike most def made Pre.. If there wasnt a Pre, Nike would still be a giant
Pre was nike's first signed athlete. he actually was one of their first salesman. He started wearing their clothing and shoes to help promote the company. He passed away far before they became a huge global monster.
I will also add that the shock technology was nike's first idea, but at the time they couldn't find light enough and durable enough material. They bought the air technology from I believe a navy guy (or they made him a partner), to help them until they could get the proper materials.
The better question to ask is "Is Nike better off as a company because of Pre's death?" (I'm talking about the attitude of the company at the time, not the $$ they've made off his name)
Neither is correct, again. 3rd world slave laborers made Nike. Running made Pre.
Nike would have been successful whether pre hit the rock or not
Jordan made Nike a powerhouse
Nike created an ad campaign using pre.
Letsrun posters ate up everything in the ad campaign and now run around saying "pre went for it dude" while blowing his "legend" way out of proportion.
Actually, he wore their clothing first, but Ille Nastasi was their first athlete with a money contract. Pre started the big time endorsment. Nike still would have made it without Pre, but I would say he was a big boost to the company's image.

there is nothing to blow out of proportion. He held all of the American records between 3k and 10k at the time of his death. Scoreboard. The charisma part and whether you loved his spirit and attitude, is another matter, open to debate; but his records are not 'legend' or the fact that he never lost any NCAA race after X-C of his frosh year. and it took the great Gerry Lindgren, as a senior to do it!

Nike had about 20 million in sales in 1975. Pre died in 1975. Nike got it's first boost in sales when Farah Fawcett wore shoes from a previously unknown sneaker company in here photo shoot of her poster that sold millions. Nike's sales spiked after that poster.
Nike continues to make Pre. Everytime Nike makes another Shox or 360, Pre throws up a little in his coffin. It's not pretty.
