What do you think? I don't think FDR was a runner prior to his illness, to keep it on topic.

Read Robert Stennet's book "Day of Deceit".
My Father was in the Navy in WWII and mentioned to me that there was always a suspicion. The GOP tried to open hearings on it, but were supressed as FDR had pretty good control of things and hid behind the flag.
Too bad.
Imagine if the Navy flyers had found the Japanese fleet EN ROUTE to Hawaii? Supposed the Japanese had found that they were discovered and turned around? Imagine if Hitler had NEVER then had to declare war on the US, keeping to his agreements with Japan and Italy?
Wow, what a different world we'd have today.
Bless our vets.
My understanding from various history classes is that teh Govt had some indications but didn't know at what extent the attack would happen ( they didn't know it would be as bad as it was). And with the technology of the time Hawaii is quite some distance from say Washington D.C. So my understanding is there were some rumors or talk before hand but not to the degree of what happened. Also if i'm not mistaken at that point in FDR's presidency he wasn't doing much, he was under the weather, and a lot of historians and other people say that the country was being run by FDR's wife. Shh don't tell the masses they won't like that.
I thought Jimmy Byrnes was running the Government as FDR did not get along with Wallace?
day of deceit spells it out. the documents have been declassified and confirm it beyond a shadow of a doubt. not only did fdr know, his administration actively provoked japan to attack pearl harbor to garner the support of the u.s. population (then very isolationist... up to 80 percent DIDN'T want to get involved in ww2) for an entrance into the european theater.
hmmm.... contrived pretext event to gain public support for a foreign invasion..... ring a bell with anyone?

This is interesting because Santa Claus, Elvis, the Tooth Fairy and I were having this same conversation the other day.

look up "operation northwoods" too. believe it or not, you might *just* have to ponder the radical notion that our gov't doesn't always act upon the highest moral principles to accomplish it's foreign policy goals. i know it hurts. buy some stars and stripes parahchute pants or something... you'll get through it.
sorry.... "parachute"

I should go out and buy some stars and stripes pants since I left mine at your moms last night but I'm too afraid of that damn Big Bad Wolf. I think he and Boogeyman are planning on catching me the next time I go out.
Yeah, we wanted to provoke war with the world's greatest naval power.
Do I need to remind all of you that but for some damn good luck on our side during Midway that our entire West coast would have been wide open for a Jap attack and invasion?
Yeah, things went exactly as planned. Goat Japan in to a fight, let them destroy most of our Pacific fleet, then hope for some good luck so we don't get invaded by them.
Supposedly Roosevelt decided we would have to fight Germany anyway. Remember, the vote to activate the draft passed by the BAREST MARGIN in the Congress. This was a backdoor way to get that to happen. Also the New Deal was losing steam, so he needed some impetus to get the economy into some sort of motion.
He was having the usual second term issues most POTUS have, too.
The US was essentially an isolationist nation, other than for the columnists on the East Coast. Going to the nation and claiming we had to fight Germany would not have been an easy sell.
I believe Britain was #1 at the time?
Better yet, read some real journalism. Like "At Dawn we Slept".
FDR did not know about Pearl Harbor in advance. But conspiracy nuts will never be convinced of this.
Strange how ignorance and "average joes" go hand-in-hand.
if he didn't know, how convienent that an entire fleet had been deployed OUT of PH just a day in advance.
When the majority of american don't want to go to War, what better way to get them to want to go then to allow a foreign attack on HOMELANDS. Everyone is always gung-ho for war after being attacked... (Pearl Harbor, 9/11). Do you have any idea how much the money has been made from going to war? all the patriotism that's risen - everyone goes out and buys an american flag, or has a "we support our troups" on their car. Lots of money to be made from a war-effort, and being a captilist country, makes questions like this incredibly easy to answer: Yes, the higher elicions of knowledge in the US DID know before-hand.
To think about:
Lately everyone wants to pull out of Iraq, that's the majority thought in the united states these days - WATCH for some crazy attack in iraq = a reason for troops to stay and "keep peace". I'm sorry, it's not about truths, it's about $$$MONEY$$$. Truths aren't going to make of a major company rich, Why do you think gas prices remain high? Bush's family money is in GAS - HE'S MAKING MONEY!!!
Bombing for War is like F***ing for Virginity.
think about it.
to those who just think people hate america for no valid reason, maybe you should research their reasons why, some might actually make sense...
Realize that the top brass are warned about the possibility of TONS of threats every day, the vast majority of which are boys crying wolf or threats that fall through or are snuffed out. Obviously, sooner or later one will come true and be as advertised. So how to react is a calculated risk either way. Overreact and look like an idiot (i.e. WMD), or don't react enough (I believe there was some degree of knowledge of the 9/11 attacks.), and regret it for the rest of your life.
Even though they have made mistakes, all-in-all they probably overreact to be on the safe side MOST of the time.
Hind sight is 20/20...
WE see that as mistakes, they see that as MONEY.
It's no coincidence that all the carriers (weapons of the future) were gone from Pearl while all the old Battlewagons -- some from pre-WWI -- were still there.
this should be a non-issue. the declassified documents EXPLICITLY SHOWING fdr's involvement have been released under the freedom of information act. it was an 8 point plan that he endorsed and had set into motion over the course of that year. read the book which includes copies of those original documents. it ain't a "conspiracy theory"... it happened. the only "conspiracy" was the one that his administration created.
well we cut off oil to japan. Oil is pretty important for countries wd intentionally provoked japan by doing that. I don't know enough about pearl harbor or fdr to know for sure. We also didn't give them a change to surrender before the second bomb and the russians were about to land on the northern island hokiado? sure i spelt it wong but whatever the people who get overly offended by typos on letsrun are idiots.
