I never post on these boards, but I feel compelled to now. I love Irving; I have worked for him now for over 15 years. It's too bad that everyone in Connecticut HS track hasn't had a chance to really get to know him, he is truly a great guy. I can't tell you how many times I've driven back from working a meet with him where is explains in detail what is happening in the opera he has blaring through the truck radio; it gives you a different perspective on the man, I can tell you that.
I've always watched in amazement as other coaches bad mouth him, avoid him, cringe if fear if they have to speak with him. Meanwhile, I can tell you I've picked every inch of his mind, and it has helped make me a better coach. Those who haven't really gotten to know him, I feel badly for you because you've lost out.
I guess a lot of what "Street" has said is where I tend to, only not so violent. I told a new kid on Monday that he'd have to remove his piercing on meet days, and he politely assured me he would. All good. I don't think rules have separate tiers; they should be followed all the time. Kids tend to be good; show me a rule-breaking kid, and I'll usually be able to show you a new/bad coach.
Irv wants perfection, and when it doesn't happen, he gets frustrated and shows it. I only wish more people from my generation would have the passion that Irving has.
