I don't get it. At least Ukraine is dirt poor so I sort of understand that funding, even though I disagree with the strategy. But Israel and Taiwan? Pay for your own sh!t.

"But they're allies!"
Ally implies a two-way relationship. I don't see these countries funding our defense.
In the cases of Israel and Ukraine, backstopping their defense only enables them to go on offense without fear of retaliation, in ways that directly conflict with our foreign policy, without fear of retaliation. Examples: Israeli strikes on Iranian embassy and Ukrainian strikes on Rostov.
If we're "allies" bankrolling their defense, we should have a say in their military strategy.
Is it still the same with Japan where we are responsible for their defense?
I agree, it’s bad policy
It's part of foreign aid package, which we have and always had. They are allies and we need to support each other to fend off hostile global forces. Better that we send over some financial assistance than having to send our people to fight them later.
We are doing the right thing and you can't be so cheap about this, Look at the larger picture.
You are supporting the Military Industrial Complex and the GDP numbers. Just see it that way.
Supporting them gives the US much greater influence in the middle east and SE Asia.
This is correct. Don't have to like it, but it is correct.
They could afford to pay for our support, and they should pay for it. We’re running a huge deficit and they’re not.
It’s very easy to have this view however, if you want the USA to remain the greatest power in the world and you like world stability, we will need to allocate dollars to maintain our positions. If we were isolated and remained domestic, China, Russia, Iran etc would be busy making new boarders. We are still the USA. USA USA.
Taiwan has facilities which have the US Simi conductor plants. China would love to get their hands on that.
You could also add South Korea to that list as well. Yes, North Korea is their neighbor but South Korea has the latest greatest weapons all supplied from the US.
"hostile" meaning whoever we are hostile to and starting wars with. Classic projection.
OP, Taiwan is NOT a country. It's part of China.
This post was removed.
Taiwan is fairly well off on a per capita basis but their total gdp is 1/32 of ours. Size matters at some point.
Because liberals love giving tax payer money away.
, he screeches as he posts from a computer/phone using chips from Taiwan.
Let's think this through: You're probably posting on a phone made in China. Does that mean you're obligated to bankroll China's defense, too?
So, if we add up good guys and bad guys.. there are way more bad guys. and.. bad guys are 'less capable.'
the great USA though is limited.
It is far 'easier' and far 'cheaper' for the USA to fight through proxies than for us to get dirty in hand to hand combat.
I was struck at one of the earliest press releases regarding the Hamas attack. iran said something off the wall: "USA doesn't have the ammunition to fight in 3 theaters."
the odd part - Iran was exactly right. but how did that come out so fast when we didn't even know who attacked? the bad guys are in cahoots.
yes. on the surface.. it's more expensive. but believe me, ask Russian economy what a war does to you. ask China how its real estate and stock market are doing post Covid.
World war 3 thus far is via proxy. no one on the planet can really go all out. with globalization, attacking someone is like punching with right hand and cutting off left foot. USA is doing it right.

The allyship is that Israel allows US military access in a hotspot part of the world. It's also close to the Suez Canal which is a vital link in the global economy that ultimately enriches the United States.

Taiwan is super important for the semi conductor production. That is the only reason why they are not part of China already.
