I wonder what would happen if a turtle got really, really fat. Would the shell break, or would the fat just get very compressed?

Turtles eat plants. Aint nobody getting fat from plants. Except cows.
Anyway, the shell grows with the turtle. Theyre not hermit crabs 🙄
The shell acts like a squeezer, so when the turtle fattens, the shell automatically squeezes out just enough cacca with commensurate malabsorption of nutrients to restrict the turtle body from outgrowing its shell. Nature’s mechanisms can be fascinating.
Stay poopy!
Probably the stupidest question I have ever seen! As if all the shells are the same size... Have you never seen baby turtles? Do they have enormous shells or are the shells small and grow with the animal? Do fat people burst through their skin as they grow or does the skin grow as well? What an absolute MORON!
It doesn’t take that much imagination. Just picture a fat person in bike shorts and not top. Muffin top city.
I am not convinced that a turtle shell can grow faster than fat can. The shell is like mineral stuff, or keratin, or protein or something. Fat is stored very quickly and doesn't have to be synthesized.
A turtle fed a high calorie diet could easy outgrow its shell fat-wise. I'm not saying scientists should study this, but knowing their ethics, they probably have already. I wonder what they found out.
Fat chick in spandex:
If a tortoise is over-fed (particularly too much protein) it can result in something called pyramiding, where its shell becomes deformed (it's not the only thing that can cause pyramiding, inadequate diet can cause it along with lots of other factors). Pyramiding causes massive problems. Tortoises can be overweight. It isn't good for them.
Tortoises require very specific conditions to remain well and thrive. They are brilliant little pets and it's sad that a lot of people don't provide the right environment for them to be well.
